Il mercato dei veicoli a guida autonoma accelera: da 364 miliardi di dollari stimati per il 2026 a oltre 5.400 miliardi entro il 2035, secondo i dati Precedence Research ripresi questa settimana da L'Economia del Corriere della Sera, in un articolo di Marco Gasperetti. Un mercato che in un decennio crescerà di oltre dieci volte.

Nell'articolo, Fabio Pressi, professore di Smart Mobility alla Luiss Business School, descrive il lavoro sviluppato con Niulinx su un servizio di Sav, Shared Autonomous Vehicle, costruito su una logica diversa dal robotaxi completamente autonomo: il veicolo raggiunge in autonomia il cliente e, al termine del noleggio, si riposiziona senza passeggeri verso un altro utente o un'area di sosta; durante l'utilizzo è il cliente a guidare, supportato da sistemi Adas avanzati che garantiscono un livello di sicurezza elevato.

Per Pressi, la guida autonoma è una componente della mobilità, da integrare in un nuovo equilibrio tra trasporto pubblico, mobilità condivisa e servizi privati.

How much does it really cost to take an elderly parent to the supermarket, to a doctor's appointment, to the pharmacy?

The real cost is the time of the person accompanying them. For a short trip, just a few kilometers but with a long wait, the economic value of that time can reach 2 to 4 euros per kilometer: 6 km and 45 minutes total, travel plus waiting plus return, add up to an estimated 11.70 euros, nearly 2 euros per km. Someone who needs two assisted trips a day reaches an estimated 7,000 to 11,000 euros a year, with the accompanying person's time making up the vast majority of that, fuel being only a small part. Every family's numbers will look a little different, but the scale is hard to ignore.

That time comes from adult children, grandchildren, caregivers, people who show up for the people they love. Especially in towns under 100,000 residents, where taxi service is often close to nonexistent, there is little alternative today.

This is where autonomous driving can make a concrete difference: the service is built around one person's needs, their 4 or 5 recurring destinations, and grows one user at a time, without needing to map an entire territory.

Robo-caring: technology giving that time back, so it can go into being together.

Quando si parla di mobilità, il dibattito pubblico tende a concentrarsi sui dettagli implementativi: powertrain, cavalli, batterie o velocità di punta. Ma la fisica del trasporto risponde a principi primi molto più rigorosi.
In questo approfondimento, il nostro CEO Luca Foresti scompone la mobilità in 17 parametri oggettivi, mettendo in luce le distorsioni con cui ogni giorno valutiamo tempo, spazio ed energia:
L’occupazione batte la tecnologia: con una media italiana di 1,17 occupanti per auto (il minimo in UE), il vero salto di efficienza sta nel coordinamento dei fattori di carico, prima ancora che nei motori.
Lo spazio è il vero vincolo urbano: la congestione non è un problema energetico, ma di densità di payload per metro quadro di corsia.
Il vero valore dell'autonomia: la guida autonoma non interviene solo sui chilometri percorsi, ma trasforma radicalmente il tempo restituito a bordo (da 0% fino a oltre il 70%) e permette di ottimizzare la percorrenza a vuoto a livello di flotta integrata.

For years, we imagined self-driving cars as something that would replace private car ownership. What's actually taking shape across Europe right now is different, and more interesting.

The projects that are genuinely moving forward are the ones designed to plug into existing public transport systems: covering underserved routes, integrating into the apps people already use for buses and trains, reaching rural areas where traditional public transport isn't economically viable but an on-demand service is.

In practice, the technology isn't trying to leapfrog what's already there. It's filling the gaps that what's already there can't cover.

It's a simple reminder that's easy to lose sight of when talking about innovation: the winning move isn't always to replace an existing system. Often it's figuring out where that system is weakest, and building something that fits exactly there.

In autonomous driving, over the long run, whoever has the lowest cost per kilometre wins.

The numbers that matter, laid out. A taxi in Europe costs between 3.5 and 4.5 euros per kilometre. A private car, factoring in total cost of ownership, purchase, insurance, maintenance, energy, comes in around 1 euro per kilometre. That's the reference threshold: above it, the autonomous fleet doesn't beat owning your own car; below it, everything changes. Niulinx's goal is to reach 0.5 euros per kilometre.

The interesting part is that this isn't only an economics problem. It's a physics problem. A car weighing two or three tonnes and taking up many square metres of road makes a low price impossible: it weighs more, consumes more, takes up more space. Reasoning from first principles, this is why we're evaluating a two-seat L7 platform, electric and lightweight.

In a country where the average number of occupants per car is 1.3, small vehicles make sense on several fronts: energy use, space on the road, and even false-positive management, because a compact car can pull over and let the others pass.

Cost per kilometre is built, first of all, on weight.

Autonomous driving in Europe doesn't have to go through the robo-taxi.

Start with a simple figure: Italy has 45 million private cars and 25,000 taxis. Three orders of magnitude apart. The real market for autonomous driving isn't replacing taxis, it's rethinking the private car.

This is where Niulinx's Robo-sharing model comes in. The car reaches the person in autonomous mode at low speed. The person gets in, drives wherever they want with no speed limit, arrives at their destination, gets out without parking, and the car returns to the fleet. The 30 km/h limit applies only to the autonomous part; when the person drives, they travel normally.

This changes three things. No taxi licence is needed, because the car goes to the person and not the other way around. You enter the market with investments in the hundreds of millions rather than the billions. And homologation becomes a more manageable path, because at low speed the risks and technical complexity are lower.

The business model is franchising: Niulinx supplies cars ready for autonomous driving and the remote service to manage false positives; the local partner, an organisation, a company, a public administration, sets pricing and decides which users to serve.

Autonomous driving is not an evolution of driving. It's something else.

One image helps frame the European regulatory question. Normal driving works with a million cars and a million drivers. Autonomous driving works with a million cars and a single "driver", the software. That's a difference in kind, not in degree.

This is why taking the rules designed for traditional cars and applying them, with minor adjustments, to autonomous vehicles is a flaw in approach. The more useful comparison isn't the car, it's aviation: when the first commercial flights arrived, we didn't adapt the rules for carriages, we built a new framework.

Then there's a second knot, an entirely European one. Today anyone wanting to operate across the whole territory faces 27 different regimes, each with its own variations. What's needed is a single path: one rule, one way of approaching autonomous driving, one office to turn to for testing and homologation. It's a long road, but it's the condition for European technology to grow in Europe.

It's one of the challenges we work on every day.

Every year, road accidents cause 1.16 million deaths worldwide and remain the leading cause of death among people aged 5 to 29 (WHO). In the EU alone, 2025 recorded around 19,400 fatalities: a 3% decrease, but still short of the 2030 targets.

Autonomous driving is not the definitive solution, but early data is encouraging: the most advanced systems available today, with over 56 million miles driven in fully autonomous mode, are already showing fewer injury-related crashes compared to human driving, particularly at intersections and in collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists.

This is where robot sharing, the shared use of self-driving vehicles, can make a real difference at scale: not a car owned by the few, but a smart, shared fleet capable of reducing human error, traffic and accidents, while freeing up valuable resources for public healthcare.

If severe accidents dropped by even 30-50%, the impact on emergency rooms and trauma centers would be enormous: fewer urgent interventions, fewer permanent disabilities, lower social costs.

Niulinx sees this scenario as a concrete lever for prevention, not just innovation: shared, autonomous mobility is part of the solution for safer cities and more sustainable healthcare systems.
