Topical medicines are becoming an increasingly important part of European healthcare.

The European topical drugs market generated nearly USD 67 billion in 2025 and is projected to approach USD 105 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 5.8%. Dermal delivery already represents the largest segment. In parallel, aging populations, chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions are supporting demand for topical pain-relief formats.

For pharmaceutical companies, this is not only a formulation opportunity. It is also a primary-packaging question.

Creams, gels and ointments need a pack that protects the formulation from light, air and moisture; allows controlled dispensing; supports hygiene; travels easily; and helps users obtain the full contents with minimal waste.

Collapsible aluminium tubes bring these requirements together in a format with a long pharmaceutical track record.

But the tube alone is not enough. Topical medicines require a packaging partner that understands pharmaceutical workflows, quality controls, documentation and the practical needs of both filling lines and patients.

👉In our latest article, we look at the growth of topical medicines and what it means for packaging decisions.

Continuity does not mean standing still.

Since 1934, the story behind Tubettificio Perfektüp has been built around one highly specialised product: the collapsible metal tube, first in tin and then in aluminium.

Across more than 90 years, technologies have changed, regulations have become more demanding and markets have become global. What has remained constant is the commitment to protecting the value of what our customers place inside every tube.

Today, that Italian manufacturing tradition continues within Perfektüp group and Bell Holding. It is strengthened by new industrial resources, international reach and shared expertise, while remaining rooted in the knowledge developed at our Milan’s headquarters.

Tradition, for us, is not a museum piece. It is knowledge passed forward, challenged by new requirements and renewed through every project.
The result is continuity with momentum: the experience of more than nine decades, still growing and still evolving.

Join us in the upcoming part of this exciting journey!

The aluminium tube market is growing. But the most interesting part is not the number alone.

Current forecasts place the global market at almost USD 1 billion in 2026 and around USD 1.65 billion by 2035, with a 5.7% CAGR. Europe led the market in 2025, while collapsible squeeze tubes remained the largest format and cosmetics and personal care the leading end-use segment. (source: Towards Packaging)

Behind this momentum is a convergence of needs: better protection for sensitive formulas, efficient dispensing, strong shelf presence and packaging designed with circularity in mind.

Growth also raises the bar for buyers. A growing market needs suppliers able to combine production capacity with technical precision, regulatory awareness and continuity of service.

At Tubettificio Perfektüp, aluminium is not one option among many: it is our specialisation. For more than 90 years, we have developed collapsible aluminium tubes for demanding applications, with a mindset shaped by pharmaceutical standards.

When a packaging format grows, choosing the right material matters. Choosing the right partner matters even more.

Control, right down to the last squeeze.

For pharmaceutical ointments and creams, good packaging is not only about protecting the formulation. It is also about controlling how the product is dispensed.
The collapsible aluminium tube responds progressively to pressure, helping users dispense the amount they actually need for each application — even when the tube is almost empty.

✔️ No sudden splashes.
✔️ No frustrating squeezing.
✔️ No need to store the tube upside down or cut it open to reach the last product inside.

Just simple, controlled dispensing from the first application to the last.

This is particularly valuable for pharmaceutical ointments, where the right quantity really mattersm as good as making everyday use as straightforward as possible. This is one of the reasons why the aluminium tube continues to be one of the pharmaceutical industry’s favourite packaging choices: because it protects the medicine whilst also taking into account how the patient will use it.

The PPWR has started to apply across the European Union. And one thing is already clear: this is only the beginning.

On 14 August—just two days after the Regulation became applicable—the European Commission opened a consultation, running until 16 September 2026, on three secondary legislative acts linked to Article 7 of Regulation (EU) 2025/40. These will help define how recycled content is calculated and verified, set sustainability criteria for plastic recycling technologies and establish how recycled materials originating outside the EU can be assessed against equivalent requirements.

Many more clarifications, implementing acts and operational questions will follow. For companies, compliance will not simply mean ticking a box. It will require staying informed, interpreting every development carefully and turning new requirements into sound packaging decisions—without losing sight of product protection, quality and business continuity.

If these first days are any indication, the regulatory journey ahead will be anything but uneventful.

And when navigating choppy waters, having a reliable packaging partner by your side makes all the difference.

At Tubettificio Perfektüp, we will continue to monitor the evolution of the PPWR and support our customers with the technical expertise, transparency and consistency they have trusted for more than 90 years.

Three tubes. One word: collapsible.
Sometimes, a picture explains a packaging feature better than a thousand words.

When we describe aluminium tubes as collapsible, we mean exactly what you see here: as the product is dispensed, the tube progressively folds in on itself and keeps its new shape.

For the end user, this translates into a very practical advantage: the tube can be squeezed almost completely, helping to use the product down to the last drop and minimise waste.

But collapsibility is not just about convenience.

Unlike other kind of tubes, aluminium tubes does not tend to return to its original shape after squeezing, thereby preventing air re-entry. This helps reduce the product’s exposure to oxygen during use and therefore supports protection against oxidation — an especially valuable feature for sensitive pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Less waste. Less exposure to air. Better control over every application.

Sometimes, the smartest packaging properties are also the easiest to see. That’s what “collapsible” looks like!

☀️ In summer, protecting a pharmaceutical formulation means thinking beyond the formula itself.

Higher temperatures, direct sunlight and humidity can put medicines under additional environmental stress — especially topical products such as creams, gels and ointments.

This is where primary packaging shows its real value.

For pharmaceutical companies, choosing the right packaging means creating an effective barrier between the formulation and the external environment. Aluminium tubes provide complete protection from light, oxygen and ambient humidity, while remaining lightweight, practical and suitable for precise dispensing.

But material alone is not enough.

When dealing with pharmaceutical products, packaging should come from a partner who understands the requirements of the Pharma industry: quality control, regulatory compliance, compatibility between formulation and packaging, appropriate formats and production processes designed around demanding standards.

At Perfektüp, this mindset comes from more than 90 years of experience in aluminium tubes and a long-standing specialisation in pharmaceutical packaging.

🛡️ Summer is a good reminder that a tube is never just a container. For the product inside, it can be a real protective shield.

The PPWR is no longer a distant deadline.

From 12 August 2026, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 will will enter its first phase of implementation across the European Union. Although not every obligation will become effective on the same date, the transition is clearly entering a new and increasingly operational phase.

📄 To support companies and national authorities, the European Commission has just published an updated Frequently Asked Questions document addressing many of the practical questions raised by the new regulatory framework.
The document provides clarification on topics including the scope of the Regulation, the responsibilities of economic operators, substances of concern, recyclability, packaging minimisation, labelling, environmental claims, conformity assessment, reuse and Extended Producer Responsibility.

For packaging buyers and manufacturers, the message is clear: PPWR compliance cannot be treated as a final check.

It must be considered from the earliest stages of packaging design, supplier selection, technical documentation and market placement.

At Tubettificio Perfektüp, compliance, traceability, approved materials and rigorous quality processes have long been part of our manufacturing culture, particularly when serving highly regulated sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry.

In our article, we explain why navigating the PPWR era starts with choosing the right packaging partner. Read it at the link the comments!

The ophthalmic market is growing. Packaging must evolve with it.

👁️ The global ophthalmic packaging market is expected to grow from USD 18.36 billion in 2026 to USD 37.39 billion by 2035, at a CAGR of 8.43%.

This expansion reflects broader demographic and healthcare trends. At least 2.2 billion people worldwide live with near or distance vision impairment, while the global population aged 60 and over is expected to reach approximately 2.1 billion by 2050.

As demand for eye-care treatments increases, pharmaceutical companies need packaging solutions that combine:

• effective formula protection
• precise and controlled dispensing
• ease of use
• patient comfort
• safety and hygiene

Eye drops currently represent the largest dosage-form segment, but ophthalmic gels are among the formats expected to experience significant growth in the coming years.

This creates new opportunities for packaging specifically designed for semi-solid formulations, such as squeezable aluminium tubes with precision ophthalmic applicators.

With its excellent barrier properties, controlled dispensing and compatibility with rigid or soft ophthalmic nozzles, the aluminium tube is ready to support the next generation of eye-care products.

At Tubettificio Perfektüp, we combine over 90 years of experience with specialised solutions for pharmaceutical and ophthalmic packaging.
