📍 Qinghai, China
❗️ On January 07, 2022, a strong earthquake of M6.6 occurred in Northern Qinghai, China. The seismic activity in this area is mostly influenced by the collision of the India–Eurasia plate . The northern margin of Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau has been continuously growing outward since the Late Cenozoic.
🛰 𝗦𝗔𝗥 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀: The estimation of the ground motion induced by the seismic event has been carried out using the SAR images acquired by Sentinel-1, before (29 Dec 2021) and after (10 Jan 2022) the seismic event. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) calculates the difference between the two images taken at different times but looking at the same place on Earth. This difference is called an interferogram, and is essentially a map of surface deformation.
Each fringe in the interferogram corresponds to ground deformation equal to 2,8 cm. The fringes are more dense close to the fault, where the ground motion reached values up to ≈ 0,5 meters.
