We have been manufacturers of adhesives from since 1931, when the founder, Hermann Leuenberger, set up his first laboratory. Today the Leuenberger R&D centre covers 200 m2, is equipped with the most modern instruments and can rely on a team of highly specialised chemical analysts. The result matters when it can be measured.

Termomelt Ecotop Cool 25WS is used to fix the absorbent pad inside PET trays. Its washability was tested at 85°C in a 2% NaOH aqueous solution.

The test showed:

✔️ 60% detachment from PET after 5 minutes
✔️ 95% detachment after 15 minutes
✔️ 100% detachment after 30 minutes
✔️ 100% detachment after 60 minutes

The adhesive remains on the absorbent pad, helping the PET tray move more easily through the washing process.

When recycling depends on separation, glue behaviour becomes part of the result.

In 1931, in a former spinning mill in Crema, Hermann Leuenberger and his sons Bruno and Werner produced the very first Leuenberger adhesive: 'Colla Leone', a casein-based wood glue sold in 10 and 25 kg tins.

Prized by the joiners of Brianza for its resistance to humidity, it was joined by rabbit-skin glue for furniture, carpentry and paper converting.

No advanced labs, no industrial reactors — just craftsmanship, a family, and a name that would one day travel the world.

Can a solid synthetic Hot-Melt glue become washable?

For a long time, the answer would have been no: this type of adhesive is usually considered insoluble in aqueous solutions.

This is the technical challenge behind Leuenberger+C’s washable Hot-Melt range.

Thanks to new formulation technologies, these granular adhesives can support PET regeneration and reuse through washing in aqueous solutions.

This means keeping the bonding performance required by packaging applications, while allowing the glue to behave correctly during the washing phase.

For over 15 years, Danilo Vogli has led our R&D laboratory as Technical Director.

As he puts it, running the lab today is very different from the past. Once, the goal was simply to meet every customer request. Now, tighter regulations, new materials and a focus on the environment push the team to explore unknown territory — thinking about results in the medium and long term.

Coming from 16 years in a multinational, Danilo found something new in Leuenberger: coordinated but human work, rapid problem-solving, and the ability to turn challenges into growth.

The lab is the beating heart of the company.
