Why can “conventional” adhesives be ineffective on high surface energy or coated substrates?

When the substrate changes, the adhesive interaction must be redesigned as well. On surfaces such as coatings or plastic films, performance critically depends on wetting capability and the adhesive’s setting kinetics.

In these cases, standard formulations may show limitations in achieving a stable and homogeneous interface, leading to reduced adhesion or potential failure in downstream processes.

For this reason, it is necessary to develop tailored solutions capable of adapting rheological properties and surface interactions to different substrates, ensuring effective wetting and controlled setting. The goal is to achieve stable and durable adhesion while minimizing the risk of failure in subsequent stages of the production process.

We have already addressed the important topic of recyclability, leaving us with one question: can an adhesive determine the recyclability of packaging?

The answer is yes. During the formation of cellulose pulp in the pulper—a key stage in paper recycling—the adhesive must allow fibers to separate without contaminating the recovered material stream.

For this reason, our water-based and bio-based solutions are designed to support recyclability, ensuring both performance in production and compatibility at the end of life of the packaging.

With spring arriving, conditions on the production floor change. What worked in February may need a slight adjustment in April.

Our technical advice: monitor substrate porosity and adjust the coating weight to avoid slip or excessively long drying times.
