We have been manufacturers of adhesives from since 1931, when the founder, Hermann Leuenberger, set up his first laboratory. Today the Leuenberger R&D centre covers 200 m2, is equipped with the most modern instruments and can rely on a team of highly specialised chemical analysts. For over 15 years, Danilo Vogli has led our R&D laboratory as Technical Director.

As he puts it, running the lab today is very different from the past. Once, the goal was simply to meet every customer request. Now, tighter regulations, new materials and a focus on the environment push the team to explore unknown territory — thinking about results in the medium and long term.

Coming from 16 years in a multinational, Danilo found something new in Leuenberger: coordinated but human work, rapid problem-solving, and the ability to turn challenges into growth.

The lab is the beating heart of the company.

It all started with casein.

In 1910 Hermann Leuenberger left the Emmental region of Switzerland and moved to Milan to trade Swiss cheese, and later casein, a milk derived protein known for its adhesive properties and its low sensitivity to humidity.

That raw material became the first technical link between dairy chemistry and glue production.

21 years later, Hermann’s company evolved into a production plant for casein-based glue under the “Colla Leone” brand, specifically used for wood bonding.

A small but decisive step: from trading a natural raw material to manufacturing glue for a real industrial application.
