Caravel has just begun a product certification process with DNV for its water-lubricated brass bearings, complementing its existing ISO 9001 system certification and the option to obtain ABS, Lloyd's, or RINA certifications for specific bearings or batches.
As part of our preparatory work, the following tests performed on the production materials (NBR elastomer and CuZn37 brass) are already available upon request:
- determination of Shore A hardness after vulcanization in accordance with UNI ISO 48-4:2019;
- determination of adhesion quality to a rigid substrate (brass to rubber) in accordance with UNI ISO 813:2019;
- determination of tensile strength in accordance with ISO 37:2017, both before and after aging in seawater;
- determination of rubber volume change in accordance with UNI ISO 1817:2025 (immersion in seawater at 20°C and 60°C).
These tests were conducted by Istituto Giordano, an independent technical body operating in the fields of certification, laboratory testing, and applied research. The institute maintains laboratories worldwide, holds Accredia accreditation, and collaborates with universities and companies across Italy and Europe. Contact us for futher information.

Bronze and NBR rubber bearing designed for dry-start operation in a turbine at a Swedish power plant. The bearing was manufactured in accordance with the procedures outlined in Section 8.3 of ISO 9001:2015, including design verification, review, and validation. Caravel’s technical staff are trained to interact with clients and suppliers in compliance with ISO 9001 requirements and hold certifications in PRINCE2 and AGILE project management best practices.

Relining of existing bushings: this is an excellent example of circular economy and predictive/corrective maintenance applied to heavy industrial components.
Recovering the outer shell of S355J steel (a low-carbon, high-strength structural steel, excellent for welding and machining) by re-rubberizing the inner rubber offers significant advantages:
1) Cost savings: Avoids the high cost of redesigning and machining a new flanged body from scratch (from solid or cast metal).
2) Reduction of machine downtime: Vulcanization and subsequent grinding of the inner rubber are often quicker than the procurement and machining times of a new metal part.
4) Energy sustainability: District heating aims for efficiency;
5) Extending the life of existing components reduces the carbon footprint of producing new steel.
In water or pumping applications (such as district heating), the internal black rubber insert (often NBR, EPDM, or polyurethane depending on fluid temperatures) performs crucial functions
6) Vibration damping: Protects the crankshaft and adjacent structures from hydraulic stresses.
7) Wear resistance and debris tolerance: Rubber can absorb small foreign bodies suspended in the water without scratching the shaft. 8) Isolation and sliding: Reduces friction and prevents galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.
It goes without saying that every single operation, procedure or material can be certified accoding to the standards the clients require by external and independent certification bodies

Caravel has achieved a prestigious new milestone: flanged bearings in 2/2 with ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certification. We can supply bearings certified by this prestigious inspection company, as well as bronze or stainless steel bearings with Lloyd's Register or RINA certification. We are also conducting laboratory tests with the Giordano Institute (www.giordano.it) to obtain DNV type approval for brass and rubber bearings. Certified quality products for demanding customers and complex marine and industrial applications.
