🌱 Unique Products of Algae n°1 🌱: SULPHATED POLYSACCHARIDES

👉 Algae sulphated polysaccharides are absolute unique products from algae!

👉 Among them we find:
- Galactans (agarans and carrageenans) produced by red algae
- Ulvans produced by green algae
- Fucans and fucoidans produced by brown algae
- Cyanoflan produced by cyanobacteria

👉 Why are they so famous?
Because with their anticoagulant, antiviral, immunomodulatory, gelling, antithrombotic, antilipidemic, and antioxidant properties, these compounds offers a wide range of application 🍰💊🩹

In this new rubric, the floor is YOURS ✏️: do you have examples of algae sulphated polysaccharides products and new applications?

💡 60’ webinar n°4 (23/04) « Contaminants in algae: where do we stand, what do we need ? »: 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮!

Last week we had a very interesting webinar on 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐞: iodine, cadmium, arsenic, lead.
After learning more about regulation of these heavy metals in Europe and in different countries (France, Germany, Norway, USA), we highlighted the necessity of a 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 of the algae-based products concerning these contaminants. We noted that it was possible to 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 🌱.

➡️ At EABA we are already cooperating with several DGs (Directorate-General) from the European Commission on algae projects, regulation, and stantardization, and we 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 again in order to have a a proper information about regulatory limits of contaminants in different countries 🙂.

We warmly thank our 5 speakers and our chairwoman for their very constructive presentations. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚 session!

💡 Webinar (long format): « Time to Start-up with algae! », thank you ✨!

On April 4th we had our very first webinar focused on 𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐮𝐩𝐬.

The presentations we had the privilege to attend were a perfect combination of scientific and commercial success, along with insightful advice from entrepreneurs and investors 🙏🏼🌱.
➡️ What does it take to launch a start-up? What are the reasons to invest in an algae-based start-up? In what future do today's algae innovations fit?...

👉 A huge 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔 to our great speakers of the day:

💡 60’ webinar n°2 « What is missing for Nori production in the EU? » : 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮!

On the 26th of March, was held our second 60’ webinar, about the cultivation and production of the 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞, a sustainable source of nutritious food while also promoting marine ecosystem health of our regions 🐟🪸🌱.

We had the pleasure to welcome 5 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬:

✅ Pi Nyvall Collén – Chairwoman of this webinar and Scientific director at OLMIX Group (France), gave us a warm welcome and introduction to the subject:
« 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫, 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞? »

✅ Karlotta Rieve – Project Manager I Hatch Innovation Services (Norway, Mexico) presented another aspect of the Nori production:
« 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥 – 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 »

✅ Rhianna Rees – Business Development Manager, Scottish Seaweed Industry Association (UK) then delved into the subject to highlight the differences in production between the two continents:
« 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐝: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚? »

✅ Rui Pereira – Head of Seaweed Division A4F-Algae for Future (Portugal) specifically focused on Europe with his presentation:
« 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 »

✅ Finally, Jessica Knoop – Postdoctoral Researcher at Universiteit Gent (Belgium) allowed us to better understand the growth of this species from a biological point of view:
« 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 »

We certainly believe that Nori cultivation and production will develop in Europe, contributing to sustainable food systems, marine ecosystem restoration, and a thriving blue economy 🌊!
