GaN Marathon Several invited speakers from all Europe (plus some from overseas).

Informal talks (back-to-back, as in a marathon) will be given and students/postdocs/researchers posters will be presented during a dedicated dinner session.

Built on Florence's main worship place on top of antique Roman Empire paleochristian church, today is the most famous Italian Renaissance symbol. It is the main Florence church and, back in XV century, it was the world's biggest church (now overcome by Rome Cathedral).
The Cathedral is famous for its dome, which was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and it is still the world's largest masonry dome.
A funny curiosity about Giotto's clock tower: the main facade covered by white marble has a 24 hours clock that turns counterclockwise following the so called "Ora Italica".

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ World Bee Day ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

We are all aware of how travelling around the world to attend conferences has a big ๐ž๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ. Even if we research advanced semiconductor materials for a more ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ, ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ and ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž world we can always do better.
As done for the last GaN Marathon edition, also this time we want to give back something to mother nature, compensating for some of the conference's ๐ž๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ.

From October 2025 GaN Marathon has decided to commit in protecting biodiversity by joining ๐Ÿ‘๐๐ž๐žโ€™๐ฌ ๐‚๐’๐‘ projects in studying local biodiversity.
The biomonitoring hive, thanks to Hive-Tech technology equipped with sensors detects parameters such as temperature, humidity, sound and weight. This enables a non invasive control and analysis over the health of the honeybee colony inside the hive. Honeybees are a perfect bioindicator for understanding the health of the surrounding biodiversity.
The hive is looked after by expert beekeepers throughout the duration of the project.

๐Ÿด๐Ÿคค Food in Florence ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿด

We know that all of you are not just coming for gallium nitride but also to taste some delicious Italian food!

Every city in Italy has its own tradition and Florence offers a very long list of typical dishes.

Starting from ๐…๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐š, that is probably the most known dish: composed by one thick meat buffer cooked on charcoal with a unique barbeque tradition.

Another traditional Florence meal is ๐‹๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐จ. Made to reduce waste to zero and not so popular elsewhere. It is a part of the stomach of the cow, served hot with bread along the streets. It is a must for who wants a mixed taste of street food and long italian tradition!

Very important for Italian culture and Mediterranean diet are vegetables and Florence has its own ways of presenting them. Some of these dishes are born to be poor, proudly becoming classics with time. ๐‘๐ข๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐š ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐š ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐จ๐ซ๐จ (tomato soup) are the most important Florence vegetable dishes, born from the re-use of vegetables and bread leftovers. These recipes are part of the history of people, prepared from the Middle Ages to nowadays.

You can enjoy all of this during your stay, sitting in a restaurant, or just walking around Florence. Along side with the meal we encourage a taste of ๐‚๐ก๐ข๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข wine.

PS. Just a local tip: if you find a little wood window, knock on it, you can buy a little glass of wine just like that!

Today we would like to introduce you to one of Florence's most famous museums, home of one of the world's finest collections of Italian Renaissance masterpieces: "Galleria degli Uffizi".
Inside, you can admire works by some of the most celebrated Italian artists, such as Raffaello and Botticelli, including the famous "Nascita di Venere". Also highly fascinating are some of the early works by a young Leonardo da Vinci.
An interesting curiosity is that along the upper floor of the gallery runs the famous Vasari Corridor: an elevated, private passageway that allowed the Medici to cross the city in total safety and privacy, connecting the political heart of Palazzo Vecchio to their residence at Palazzo Pitti.

If you have never been there, we highly recommend letting yourself be captivated by the thrill of walking where beauty changed history forever.
