Educational activity with students

On May 21, the University of Bologna team involved in the PoLaRecCE project carried out a new educational activity with students from the 1D class of the Gozzadini middle school in Castenaso.

Through simple experiments and observations, students explored how different soils interact with pollutants and discussed the importance of soil health in everyday life.

The activity offered a practical and interactive way to explore these topics, encouraging curiosity and participation among the students while raising awareness on soil health and sustainability.

PoLaRecCE presented at the “Peony for Europe” event in Genoa

On 11 May, Genoa hosted “Peony for Europe - Innovation and results of Interreg projects in Liguria” at the Council Hall of the Metropolitan City of Genoa.
A day dedicated to European culture, civic participation, and the value of cooperation between territories.

Paolo Lambertini, Mayor of Cairo Montenotte, presented the PoLaRecCE project, with a specific focus on the Italian Pilot Site.

Organised by the Regional Authority of Liguria and ANCI (PoLaRecCE partner), the event offered a meaningful opportunity to highlight intergenerational dialogue, promote European awareness, and strengthen the connection between the city and the opportunities provided by EU programmes.

The meeting also showcased the results and best practices developed within European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg), demonstrating the impact and relevance of cross border collaboration.

DISTAL Photo Contest

During the DISTAL Photo Contest at the University of Bologna, the PoLaRecCE project was also represented by a series of photographs taken during research activities. One of these images was selected as the winning photograph of the contest.
The photographs capture different moments of the project: sample preparation in the Bologna laboratory illuminated by the sunset light, an improvised lunch break during a sampling campaign in Hungary, and a sampling activity in Castenaso carried out under the rain, in the typically unpredictable conditions of fieldwork.
Three images that offer a concrete glimpse into the daily reality of research: laboratory work, field campaigns, travel and the shared moments that accompany the projec

PoLaRecCE disseminated during the Seminar on the Management of Degraded Areas

On April 15, 2026, the Department of Environmental Protection of the Marshal's Office of the Opole Voivodeship organized a seminar dedicated to the management of degraded areas, with the participation of 55 representatives from regional and local administrations.

Researchers from the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Project LP) contributed to the event by presenting activities related to the Interreg Central Europe project PoLaRecCE – New chance for Polluted Lands. Their presentations covered the project’s objectives, forms of soil degradation in the Silesian Voivodeship, results of municipal surveys, and the assumptions of the Soil Monitoring Law (SML).
At the end of the first part of the seminar, the possibility of using the soil magnetometry method was presented. (ISO 21226:2019) for the preliminary detection of soil contamination (screening).

On April 16th, the PoLaRecCE project met Class 1B of Gozzadini Middle School in Castenaso for a hands-on learning activity.

Twenty 11-year-old students and their teachers explored how different soils react to pollutants through experiments, turning the classroom into a small laboratory.

The initiative sparked curiosity and helped students understand how soil properties influence the retention and movement of pollutants, highlighting the role of soil health in everyday life.

Castenaso Municipality plays a key role in the PoLaRecCE project as a demonstration site, making this activity particularly meaningful in connecting research with the local environment.

On 1 March 2026, during the Bologna Marathon, the PoLaRecCE team from the University of Bologna engaged with citizens at the “Soil Health for Everyone’s Health” stand in Piazza Nettuno.
The project activities dedicated to the management and restoration of degraded soils were presented, with a focus on innovative solutions for the remediation of contaminated land.
On a day devoted to sport and well-being, the team emphasized the link between soil health and collective well-being, underlining how soil plays a fundamental role in supporting both environmental and human health.

Esmeralda Vita Awarded Master’s Degree for Thesis on Soil Education

Esmeralda Vita has successfully completed her Master’s Degree in Planning and Management of Forest, Territory, Landscape, and Environment at the University of Bologna, Italy, on December 12th 2025. Her thesis, entitled The Language of Soil: An Educational Experience in Schools within the PoLaRecCE Project, focused on disseminating knowledge to primary and secondary school students regarding the critical role of soil and the principles for its preservation.

The research integrated art, gamification, narrative techniques, and scientific inquiry to enhance accessibility. Empirical observations from participating schools consistently affirmed that comprehension of soil science is markedly improved through the convergence of experiential learning, interpersonal engagement, and rigorous scientific methodology.

| Educational activities in Castenaso – 2 /12/ 2025
As part of the PoLaRecCE project, UniBo carried out a series of educational activities dedicated to soil. These activities involved around 90 children and several teachers from the 'La Giostra' nursery school and the 'G. Marconi' primary school in Castenaso.
Through simple explanations and practical experiments, the children learnt about the components of soil, the main sources of pollution and why it is important to maintain healthy soil. Activities included creating their own soil and conducting water filtration tests, demonstrating how different types of soil react differently to pollution and how certain soil characteristics can influence the spread or retention of pollutants.
Such initiatives form part of PoLaRecCE's commitment to promoting soil awareness and cultivating environmental consciousness from an early age.

| 22nd Annual Conference, "The Language of Research" - 20/11/2025- Bologna (Italy)
The PoLaRecCE project was presented to high school students from Bologna and other cities in the Emilia-Romagna region at the 22^(nd) Annual Conference, 'The Language of Research', organised by the National Research Council (CNR).
As in previous years, the students took part in interactive workshops and hands-on activities, exploring scientific concepts through games and practical demonstrations.

On this occasion, PoLaRecCE introduced an updated version of the 'Soil on Demand' laboratory, enabling participants to engage with fundamental soil science principles such as buffering capacity and soil–pollutant interactions, and to understand how the project tackles the challenges of reclaiming contaminated land for non-food production.
