Thetida, a project dedicated to protecting Europe’s coastal and underwater cultural heritage from climate change and natural hazards, is approaching its conclusion, marking a crucial stage in its journey towards delivering innovative tools and strategies for resilience and preservation.

On 27 May 2026, the 6th THETIDA Plenary Meeting took place in Faro, Algarve (Portugal).
This gathering marked an important opportunity to review the achievements reached so far, align on the remaining activities, and define the roadmap for the final phase of the project.
The discussions were mainly centered on testing, assessment and validation in the pilot actions, while also focusing on dissemination, communication and exploitation activities.

With the project entering its final months, partners remain committed to consolidating results, maximizing impact, and ensuring that THETIDA’s legacy continues to support the long-term protection and resilience of Europe’s coastal and underwater cultural heritage.

🌍 World Biodiversity Day

Protecting what cannot be seen is one of the most complex - and most urgent - challenges of our time.

Within underwater ecosystems lies a vital part of the planet’s biodiversity: fragile habitats, protected species and a unique archaeological heritage that tells our story.

At EdgeLab S.p.A., we work every day to make the invisible visible. Through advanced technologies and underwater drones, we contribute to scientific research, the protection of marine ecosystems, and the preservation of submerged cultural heritage.

Our commitment is also strengthened through active participation in European projects focused on sustainability and the preservation of underwater heritage. Many of our initiatives are supported by European grants or developed in collaboration with public institutions, universities, and research centers.

Today, we celebrate biodiversity by committing to protect it, even beneath the surface.

EdgeLab’s first official visit to Poland.

Over the past few days, Federico Pensa, COO of EdgeLab, carried out the company’s first official business visit to Poland together with our commercial partner Turrim.

The visit included a series of meetings in Warsaw, Gdynia and Gdańsk with prospective partners, institutional representatives, universities and organisations operating in the maritime, defence and advanced technology sectors.

Among the highlights of the visit was the meeting with representatives of the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia, including Agata Zaleska Fornal and Dean Marek Przyborski, where discussions focused on future cooperation opportunities in advanced maritime technologies, autonomous systems and next-generation navigation solutions, including quantum navigation.

The visit represented an important step in strengthening EdgeLab’s international network and exploring new collaborative opportunities within the Baltic and Northern European maritime ecosystem.

A sincere thank you to all the people and organisations who welcomed us with great professionalism and hospitality.

In April 2026, EdgeLab carried out a series of underwater inspection activities on the wreck of the Equa, located approximately two miles off the coast near Riomaggiore, as part of the Thetida project, deploying an autonomous underwater drone.

During the operations, the AUV reached a depth of 25 metres, operating approximately 5 metres from the wreck and following a grid pattern to ensure full area coverage. On board, an optical camera and side scan sonar enabled the acquisition of high-resolution imagery and acoustic information, allowing the 3D reconstruction of a detailed digital representation of the wreck through dedicated software.

The final aim of the data collection was to assess the state of preservation of the wreck and to develop tools to enhance awareness and knowledge of submerged cultural heritage, improving the public understanding and visibility of shipwrecks.

A further step in advancing the digital documentation of submerged cultural heritage through the use of autonomous underwater drones.

Meet U-Tracker Pro: a multifunction Autonomous Underwater Vehicle built for hydrography and oceanography. It ensures reliable performance even in low or zero visibility, with a low magnetic signature and minimal acoustic impact.

Its FOG-grade Inertial Navigation System (INS) delivers high-precision positioning, enabling stable navigation with features such as fixed depth and terrain following, essential for accurate, repeatable missions.

With an operational depth of 300 metres and up to 8 hours of endurance, it is designed for efficient data collection.

Equipped with PING 3DSS, U-Tracker Pro enables advanced bathymetry and high-resolution 3D seabed imaging, alongside a modular payload supporting sonar, cameras, and environmental sensors.

Applications include:

- Bathymetry and 3D seabed mapping;
- Inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) operations (pipelines, FPSOs, risers);
- Port and harbor inspection.

Technology beneath the surface, delivering insight above it.

On Earth Day, one fact stands out:
we know more about the Moon than about our own ocean floor.

The ocean is still one of Earth’s last great frontiers.

At EdgeLab, we develop advanced underwater robotics to make the seafloor more accessible, mapped, and monitored.

Because understanding the ocean is the first step to protecting it -and protecting it is our responsibility.
