EdgeLab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PING DSP (a NORBIT company), establishing a strategic collaboration for the integration and joint development of advanced underwater paylo
This partnership brings together the expertise of both companies to accelerate the development, integration and commercialisation of innovative payload solutions for autonomous underwater vehicles, driving technological innovation and expanding operational capabilities across a wide range of underwater applications.

As the first milestone of this collaboration, EdgeLab has successfully integrated the PING DSP 3DSS into U_Tracker PRO, a man-portable AUV rated to 300 m. The integration enables high-performance bathymetry and 3D mapping, with INS-FOG and GNSS-denied operations capabilities, paving the way for forthcoming demonstration activities across a range of operational applications.

Through this collaboration, EdgeLab and PING DSP will jointly explore new technologies and applications, supporting the continued evolution of autonomous underwater systems and reinforcing their shared commitment to innovation in the underwater domain.

Ports are becoming increasingly connected, intelligent and data-driven. MTCOM is working towards this transformation by developing technologies that bring connectivity, autonomy and environmental monitoring together within a single ecosystem.

Co-financed by the Regional Programme – European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Liguria 2021–2027, MTCOM brings together EdgeLab, SMARTY, Sitep Italia, Info Com, the University of Genoa and the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa).

As part of the project, EdgeLab contributes its expertise in autonomous marine systems, with the USV_EL CAT playing a key role in collecting, processing and transmitting real-time data across port environments. Equipped with environmental sensors, stereo vision and advanced communication and navigation systems, the USV_EL CAT supports safer, more efficient and data-driven port operations.

Through collaboration between industry and research partners, MTCOM is laying the foundations for the next generation of smart, connected and sustainable ports.

As underwater missions become increasingly demanding, collecting accurate data while reducing operational complexity is more important than ever.

Developed by EdgeLab S.p.A., U_Tracker PRO is a compact Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) designed for bathymetric surveys, 3D mapping, pipeline inspections and infrastructure monitoring, enabling efficient and reliable underwater operations through high-precision navigation, advanced manoeuvrability and accurate data acquisition.

Its compact and lightweight design simplifies deployment and reduces operational complexity, while its advanced 5-DOF propulsion architecture ensures precise manoeuvrability and optimal sensor positioning. Equipped with advanced navigation systems and high-resolution sensors, U_Tracker PRO delivers reliable autonomous operations in GPS-denied environments, providing accurate visual and bathymetric data.EdgeLab’s intuitive JDeMoN interface further simplifies mission planning, monitoring and ex*****on.

A new field mission within the Thetida project, involving EdgeLab S.p.A., the Universidade do Algarve UAlg and Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve Ciência Viva do Algarve, has focused on monitoring the B-24 Liberator (PB4Y-1) wreck, a US Navy aircraft from the Second World War and today a site of significant historical and environmental value.

The objective of the mission is to collect valuable data to assess the preservation status of the wreck and better understand the evolution of the surrounding marine ecosystem.

During the operations, EdgeLab tested for the first time under real mission conditions the hyperspectral camera, integrated onboard the U_Tracker IV AUV, successfully demonstrating payload integration and reliable data acquisition in a real underwater environment.

The vehicle operated with stability and precision, ensuring full manoeuvrability, effective system management, and hovering capability above the area of interest.

Another step towards more advanced underwater heritage monitoring, combining marine robotics, innovative sensing technologies, and scientific research.

As part of THETIDA, a Horizon Europe project focused on safeguarding Europe's coastal and underwater cultural heritage from the impacts of climate change and natural hazards, we tested the integration of a hyperspectral camera on U_Tracker IV, assessing its performance and adaptability in an underwater environment.

Hyperspectral imaging captures data across multiple wavelengths, from the visible spectrum to the near-infrared, providing valuable information on material composition and degradation processes that cannot be detected by conventional imaging. This technology has the potential to support the non-invasive analysis and conservation of underwater archaeological artefacts.

Deploying a hyperspectral camera underwater presents significant technical challenges. The AUV had to maintain a stable position over the target while operating at depths of around 40 metres, requiring dedicated integration, a specialised underwater housing, infrared illumination and calibration procedures to ensure reliable data acquisition.

The campaign provided valuable experience in integrating and operating hyperspectral imaging on an autonomous underwater vehicle, contributing to the development of innovative tools for the future monitoring and preservation of underwater cultural heritage.
