At HB, the spaces are articulated rather than divided. Areas designed for deep focus coexist with environments intended for exchange, discussion and shared presence. This approach reflects a broader shift in how we think about the workplace, no longer as a static container of tasks, but as a dynamic ecosystem that adapts to different rhythms, needs and states of mind.

Alongside operational functions, new types of spaces take shape, designed for relaxation, informal interaction and moments of pause. Lounges, quiet corners, social hubs and recreational areas become integral to the environment, offering opportunities to step away, recharge and return with greater clarity. These spaces support well being and encourage more natural, human interactions that extend beyond strictly work related activities.

Designing in this way means acknowledging that productivity is not linear and that value often emerges in the transitions between focus and release. It is within these in between moments that ideas evolve, relationships deepen and a more balanced integration between life and work becomes possible.

We are back from BUILT TO LAST – Durability and building envelope in timber construction, the technical course hosted by Rothoblaas and focused on durability, building envelope design, and the performance of timber buildings.

During the event, our engineer Manuel Schieder presented the case study:
DESIGN FOR DURABILITY: CASE STUDIES
Schools and large timber structures: the case of CANOPY – CITYWAVE in Milan

The presentation explored design approaches and strategies applied to large-scale timber structures, with a focus on durability and building envelope integration.

A highly valuable technical exchange on topics that are becoming increasingly central to the development of contemporary timber construction.

The Aktiv- & Wellnesshotel Familiamus, the first five‑star hotel in the Gitschberg Jochtal alpine and ski region in Meransen, was developed starting in 2021 and reaches a total volume of 65,603 m³. The hotel opened in time for the 2022 Christmas holidays, after only 18 months of construction, establishing itself as a new benchmark for high‑end hospitality in the Dolomites.

On May 12, Claudio Bertagnolli, Managing Director of HB, gave a guest lecture at the University of Sarajevo’s Faculty of Civil Engineering focused on the CityWave project in Milan.

During the conference, the project was explored through its structural vision, complex geometries, construction progress, and the engineering challenges involved in the realization of one of the most significant contemporary developments in the international architectural landscape. The lecture also provided insights into the concept, efficiency, and broader international significance of the project.

The event represented a valuable opportunity to share experiences, exchange perspectives, and engage in a dialogue around innovation, structural engineering, and advanced construction processes.

A sincere thank you to the University of Sarajevo, for the warm hospitality and for hosting this inspiring moment of discussion and knowledge sharing.

Within this vision, Marco Righi plays a key role as Managing Partner, combining a solid engineering background with the responsibility for the Modena office, where he contributes to the development and coordination of complex projects within an increasingly international context.

His work reflects a way of leading that is grounded in clarity, technical rigor and trust in people, translating strategic direction into concrete actions while fostering an environment where autonomy and collaboration can coexist effectively.

Through his experience and approach, he helps shape a culture in which leadership is not about control, but about enabling others to perform at their best, reinforcing the values that define HB and supporting the company’s growth with consistency and vision.

Leadership, in our view, is not about control or top-down direction, but about providing a clear and shared sense of orientation, especially when projects become complex and require the ability to navigate uncertainty with consistency and vision.

It means creating clarity where there is complexity, trusting competent people and enabling them to take ownership of their work, while making decisions with a strong sense of responsibility and transparency that reinforces both individual accountability and collective alignment.

At HB, we believe in autonomy because we believe in people, in dialogue because meaningful results emerge through exchange, and in clarity as a fundamental condition for working effectively and with confidence; leading a team ultimately means creating the environment in which everyone can express their full potential and contribute to something greater than themselves.

Our engineer Manuel Schieder will be among the speakers at the Built to Last – Durability and Building Envelope in Timber Constructions course, hosted at the headquarters of Rothoblaas in Cortaccia (BZ).

The course offers a technical and practical approach to key topics such as durability and building envelope design in timber construction, enriched by real examples and case studies.

On May 8th he will present:
𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀
Schools and large timber structures: the case of CANOPY – CITYWAVE in Milan

A contribution focused on design strategies and real-world applications to ensure durability in large-scale timber structures.

The redevelopment of the Monte Ivigna cable car, whose new construction phase began in 2010, aimed to upgrade both the valley and mountain stations to current technical and functional standards.

The intervention required the complete demolition and reconstruction of the existing structures, with the goal of offering users enhanced comfort and an architectural identity consistent with the Alpine landscape.

For this project, HB was responsible for the structural ex*****on design, developing technical solutions capable of meeting the complex operational and environmental requirements of a high altitude Alpine infrastructure.

Operating between Lana, Milan and Munich, we develop international projects within a network of teams that collaborate seamlessly across borders, combining diverse perspectives and technical expertise while maintaining a strong sense of coherence and shared direction.

What truly defines us, however, is not only the geographical breadth of our work, but the way we approach it every day: through attentive listening, mutual respect and open dialogue, creating an environment where different cultures and competencies can meet, enrich each other and contribute to building solutions that are both rigorous and deeply human.

We believe that the best engineering takes shape when people feel part of something meaningful, not only in relation to the projects they contribute to, but also within the team they belong to; for this reason, we offer a context in which professional growth goes hand in hand with genuine human connection, allowing us to remain an international reality without ever becoming anonymous.

Claudio Bertagnolli, Managing Director of Holzner & Bertagnolli Engineering, was interviewed by Confindustria Alto Adige’s publication Industry Innovation in South Tyrol, sharing insights on one of the most ambitious engineering projects currently under development.

The interview focuses on CityWave, a complex structure defined by two towers, 55 and 105 meters high, connected by a suspended roof spanning 135 meters: an unprecedented solution in terms of scale and structural concept.

Through this project, Bertagnolli highlights the role of advanced engineering in turning visionary architecture into reality, pushing the boundaries of what can be built while maintaining precision, control and structural integrity.
