↩️ A project can change direction in the first meeting.
A medical device manufacturer came to us with a clear request: a sterile packaging solution for a delicate component with an irregular shape.
At first, the brief seemed straightforward.
The device had to stay stable inside the package, remain visible for quick identification and be compatible with the selected sterilisation process.
Then, during the technical discussion, one detail changed everything.
The customer explained how the device would not be handled, highlighting the risk of grasping it incorrectly when the healthcare professional removes it from the packaging. It had to be removed quickly, with a controlled movement, while preserving the sterile field.
That single detail shifted the focus.
The packaging could no longer be developed around protection alone.
It had to guide the healthcare professional towards the correct grip, minimize the risk of use errors, and provide an intuitive interaction.
From that point, the development team worked on different configurations:
✔️ a packaging to keep the device in position;
✔️ a material structure aligned with the sterilisation process;
✔️ an intuitive packaging design;
✔️ a prototype to test real handling conditions.
One of the first prototypes looked correct on paper, but during the formative usability tests, the user interaction was not fully satisfactory.
That feedback arrived early.
And that made all the difference.
The design was adjusted prior to the design freeze, avoiding late-stage revisions and helping the project move forward with greater confidence.
This is the value of technical discussion in the early stages of development: it brings product requirements, process needs and real use into the same conversation.
