ALPI Xilo Acacia is a new veneer curated by Piero Lissoni, whose continuous exploration of diverse species of wood forms the basis for contemporary, sustainable surfaces. The Xilo collection, a large family that contains dozens of special wood types, has now received a new member, Acacia, in two different textures, Striped and Planked (seen here).

Piero Lissoni, the ALPI art director: “Eleven years of collaboration with ALPI mean 11 years of innovation. Every time I think of a new project to do with ALPI, I imagine ever-different worlds. I need experience, knowledge and technology, but at the same time, I need amazement. Each year for 11 years, in my opinion, we have succeeded in creating amazement.”

George Yabu: “I was excited to work with ALPI, because wood is in our roots, forests are in our DNA. I thought, how can we make an expression that stands out in the world and offer something Italian made where the source of innovation came from across the Atlantic, from Canada.”
Glenn Pushelberg: “Canadian inspired.”

Curated by Piero Lissoni, ALPI Microline is a finely textured new veneer. Available in seven hues, the wood's surface is soft and buttery, smooth and uniform. From up close, almost invisibly fine lines of grain give the veneer a textural substance similar to fabric. Minimal variations in density and tone make for depth and delicate vibrancy.

Watercolour illustrations by Yabu Pushelberg. For their first ALPI veneers, the Canadian firm interpreted the tree-bark of one of the country's most characteristic trees in ALPI Birch, and waves of coloured light tinged with purple, blue and petroleum in ALPI Aurora Purple. Yabu Pushelberg's installation at the ALPI showroom during Milan Design Week is based on the idea of a magical woodland inhabited by fantastical creatures, all clad with the new veneers.

Tokyo: Azabudai Hills (2023) by the Mori Building Company is a city within a city, 35 years in the making. Conceived to be a modern urban village, it is a huge open space in the heart of Tokyo filled with greenery and compact high-rise towers with interiors decorated with ALPI wood.

London: the Alessandro Mendini exhibition at Estorick Collection is the UK’s first solo exhibition dedicated to one of post-war Italy’s most creative and influential designers. Among the 50 key works that celebrate Mendini’s playful and poetic approach to design is the Qfwfq totem (2018). Covered in ALPI Pointillism Col., a veneer designed by Mendini with Alex Mocika, the Qfwfq belongs to the Tre Primitivi series: three pieces of furniture with basic, primitive shapes that express archaic monumentality.
