What if you didn’t have to build the entire HiL framework before it could start delivering value?
Yesterday at ICTSS 2026 – the 38th International Conference on Testing Software and Systems in Paris, Agostino Mele presented Kineton’s research on a risk-prioritized, incremental approach to Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) validation.
Developed by Valerio Accardo, Antonio Basso, Luca Fiorilli, Luigi Novella, Antonio Vitale and Agostino Mele, the paper, "A Risk-Prioritized Incremental Methodology for Hardware-in-the-Loop Validation of a Software-Intensive Home Appliance,” explores how to build validation capabilities progressively, prioritizing the tests that deliver the greatest value instead of developing a complete simulator upfront.
The results are tangible:
→ 353 test cases in the deployed regression
→ 95% of documented requirements covered
→ Average nominal test duration reduced from 60 to 15 minutes
→ Complete regression reduced from three weeks to two days
But the real value goes beyond speed. The approach also brought previously impractical, variable or unsafe test conditions into routine regression, expanding what could be validated, not just automating existing tests.
For Kineton, this is what connects research and engineering: turning real industrial challenges into new approaches to software validation.
👉 The paper will be published by Springer in the ICTSS proceedings.
A great achievement for the whole team. Well done! 👏
