Dr Erica Angliker, VOICING Project Researcher, to Deliver Prestigious Lecture at the University of Oxford
On Thursday, 29 October, Dr Erica Angliker will present her latest research at one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions: the University of Oxford. Her lecture for the Greek Archaeology Group and Prehistoric and Early Greece Graduate Seminar is titled Cycladic Sanctuaries of Apollo: Nature, Movement, Landscape, and the Making of Sacred Soundscapes.
While recent archaeoacoustic studies have largely concentrated on music and performative rituals, Dr Angliker's research places the natural environment—specifically geophonies and biophonies—at the centre of the investigation. By combining archaeological evidence with spatial analysis across four Cycladic sanctuaries, she demonstrates that natural sounds were dynamic components in ancient ritual practices.
As part of the VOICING project, Dr Angliker utilises her strong background in Classical Archaeology to map these historical soundscapes, contributing to a deeper understanding of past sensory experiences.
