It was an honour to have the opportunity to collaborate with Latvijas Finieris on the Latvian Architecture Award project and to present a special award to the project that, in the combined evaluation of the Latvijas Finieris and Riga Wood committee, best showcased sustainable construction solutions and the use of wood in building!

The 16 projects shortlisted for the Latvian Architecture Award were assessed according to three main criteria:

1. Structure and Environment: Highlighting projects that revitalise, enhance, or develop previously neglected or degraded areas, while considering the socioeconomic benefits for the location.
2. Choice of Materials: Evaluating the use of wood in the project.
3. Sustainability: Recognising innovative approaches to sustainability through materials, energy efficiency, environmental quality, and more.
After careful consideration, the special award from Latvijas Finieris was granted to the school project by Lauder Architects in Sillamäe, Estonia.

New solar park unveiled at VEREMS mill to power sustainable birch plywood manufacturing!
The park, covering an area of approximately three hectares, will be powered by 3600 bi-facial solar panels, which will be positioned according to the specific requirements of the terrain using adjustable mounts. The total installed generating capacity of the generators/inverters planned for the connection is 2000 kW, which will be used to partially cover the self-consumption of the VEREMS mill.

It was an honour to welcome the President of Latvia, Mr. Edgars Rinkēvičs, to our tree nursery, "Zābaki"!

"Zābaki" is one of the first nurseries in Latvia to pioneer the cultivation of birch container seedlings. Each year, the nursery produces approximately 1.3 to 1.5 million birch seedlings, which are planted in forests across Latvia and Europe. Additionally, it plays a crucial role as a partner in forestry research, collaborating closely with forest scientists.

One more step closer to a greener industry!

In collaboration with industrial partners across Europe through the consortium, Latvijas Finieris is developing innovative methods to replace fossil-based raw materials in resin production with lignin – a natural component of wood.

The construction of a new resin plant, which will produce up to 45,000 tons of resin annually with renewable lignin replacing more than a third of the traditionally used fossil materials, is currently underway and is expected to be completed within two years.
