What really changes when a swivel is equipped not with one, but with two thrust bearings?

👉It changes its ability to work in both load directions: pull and push.

Three fundamental elements are installed on the central rotating shaft:
➡ a main thrust bearing, sized to support the prevailing axial tensile load during pull back;
➡ a central radial bearing, designed to support any non-axial loads, meaning loads perpendicular to the axis of rotation;
➡ an additional opposed thrust bearing, designed to also support the axial compression load generated during push back.

The additional thrust bearing also helps compensate part of the load acting on the main bearing, increasing the overall efficiency of the system and making it more rigid.

On site, HDD pullback never happens under perfect conditions.

That’s why the swivel must be designed for real working conditions.

✅During HDD pipe pullback, eliminating rotation is not enough: the swivel must transfer the pulling force, withstand any forward pushing, and keep working even when stress loads, drilling mud and alignment are not ideal.
