STKO ASDEA

STKO ASDEA Asdea Soft is a software development company. Asdea Soft is renowned for having created STKO, a GUI for navigating OpenSees.

We create technologically innovative and high-quality software solutions for numerical simulation and data visualization. Our Story:

Engineers + Software Developers + International Experience = ASDEA Software
ASDEA Software was created in 2017 as a branch of the engineering company Advanced Structural Design & Analysis (ASDEA). While ASDEA focuses on providing solutions in the field of structural

engineering, ASDEA Soft focuses on developing customized and original software to meet our clients’ needs. Working both in engineering and on software development creates a synergy that allows us to develop software to meet our clients’ specific needs. ASDEA Soft has also developed original features such as STKO (Scientific ToolKit for OpenSees). STKO for OpenSees features pre and postprocessing modules that are easily customizable via a python-based scripting interface among other innovative features such as CAD modeling tools, import-export of standard CAD file formats, geometry repair tools, visualization algorithms, advanced visualization algorithms for beam/column and shell elements, an open-source third-party database library for storing your results which includes an MPCO Recorder, and more. Mission:

Our goal is to provide highly innovative software solutions for numerical simulation, data visualization, and in the field of structural engineering. We are committed to helping our clients and partners bring their projects to life, with the hope of unleashing technological progress for tomorrow’s world. About:

Advanced Structural Design & Analysis (ASDEA) is an engineering company with decades of significant experience in research and work in the international arena. Modeling RC frames with masonry infills presents a significant challenge due to the complex interaction between the structural frame and the non-structural partitions. Capturing the actual seismic response requires accounting for how infills continuously modify global stiffness, alter load paths, and introduce highly nonlinear behaviors that vary as the loading progresses.

The main difficulty lies in the evolution of the structure during the analysis: as damage progresses, infill elements crack, degrade, and eventually lose their capacity entirely.

To avoid static approximations that fail to capture this degradation, a dynamic modeling approach is necessary. This video demonstrates a workflow using STKO and OpenSees to implement equivalent nonlinear mechanisms for infills. The simulation accounts for frame-infill interaction and utilizes algorithmic element removal to represent the progressive loss of capacity as damage evolves.

This webinar focuses on a part of modeling that is often treated as “just constraints”, until it becomes the source of instability, unexpected stiffness, or results that don’t make sense: interactions.

In practical FEM modeling, connections between components are often introduced pragmatically to enforce kinematics, transfer forces, or handle offsets between idealized parts. This works well in simple cases, but small choices in how connectivity is imposed can quickly become hidden assumptions that dominate stiffness, stress patterns, and sometimes even numerical stability.

STKO provides dedicated Interaction tools to make these connections explicit, controlled, and easy to verify, so your model remains robust as complexity grows. Because good analysis is not only about elements and materials. It’s about how everything works together.

STKO introduces a geometry-first workflow: define the structure first, then discretize it with full control and consistency. Connectivity is preserved automatically, and complex geometries remain manageable.

💡 Monday question: what is an interaction in a structural model?

In nonlinear structural analysis, most modeling errors come from connections and constraints between components.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7-OpIK5RjM

With STKO, interactions are part of the modeling process from the beginning. Connectivity is defined directly through geometry, constraints remain consistent and controllable, and the interaction between components is explicit.

A structural model is not just a collection of elements. It is a system of interacting parts that must work together the way the real structure does.

If the connections are wrong, the structural response is wrong.

This tutorial explains how to enter the relationship that occurs between model elements through interactions. We’ll explore the creation of node to node, no...
