The world of bees continues to reveal just how complex and fascinating it is!
A new study published in Science Advances investigated magnetic sensitivity in bees by analysing 96 species belonging to six different families. The researchers found evidence of ferromagnetic material in 74 species, with signals detected across all the families included in the study.
These materials could consist of iron oxide nanoparticles, particularly magnetite, a naturally magnetic substance that is being studied as a possible biological basis for magnetoreception.
The finding does not concern honey bees alone: magnetic material was also observed in solitary bees, stingless bees and other groups with very different lifestyles.
However, this does not mean that the study demonstrated a direct link between these particles and the way all bees navigate. The researchers measured the physical properties of tissues rather than the behaviour of each individual species.
Still, the result opens up a fascinating possibility: bees may contain microscopic particles capable of adding another dimension — invisible to our eyes — to the way they perceive their environment.
Once again, research reminds us just how complex the relationship between bees, their environment and their behaviour can be.
