Il livello medio dei mari sta aumentando con un incremento attuale di quasi 40 cm al secolo. La causa è il riscaldamento globale, fenomeno che provoca la fusione dei ghiacci e l'espansione termica degli oceani.
Nel Mar Mediterraneo si prevede che l'aumento del livello medio sarà di 60 cm ma anche di più, fino a raggiungere un aumento di 1 m entro il 2100, con possibili conseguenze disastrose per le aree costiere, come Venezia e Salonicco.

IPCC's sea level rise projections released in the AR6 Report (2021) would be an underestimate (see www.ipcc.ch). Along some Mediterranean coasts sea level is rising almost three times faster due to land subsidence, a new study by Antonio Vecchio, Marco Anzidei and Enrico Serpelloni shows.

A new study was just released to support territorial planners and policy makers to evaluate what the impacts on the coasts caused by rising sea levels will be and protect coastal populations living in the Mediterranean.
