EPOS - European Plate Observing System

EPOS - European Plate Observing System European Plate Observing System a pan-European single, distributed, sustainable infrastructure EPOS is a long-term integration plan of national existing RIs.

The European Plate Observing System (EPOS) is the integrated solid Earth Sciences research infrastructure approved by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and included in the ESFRI Roadmap in December 2008. The goal of EPOS is to promote and make possible innovative approaches for a better understanding of the physical processes controlling earthquakes, volcanic eruption

s, unrest episodes and tsunamis as well as those driving tectonics and Earth surface dynamics. Integration of the existing national and trans-national RIs will increase access and use of the multidisciplinary data recorded by the solid Earth monitoring networks, acquired in laboratory experiments and/or produced by computational simulations. Establishment of EPOS will foster worldwide interoperability in Earth Sciences and provide services to a broad community of users

EPOS is aimed at a broad stakeholders community including European and Mediterranean countries. We have identified the following stakeholders categories:
1. Geoscience data providers.
2. Scientific user community (including Academia).
3. National research organisations & funding agencies.
4. Data and services providers and users outside the research community (incl. industry). Several thousands of researchers in Earth sciences will benefit from the services provided by EPOS, fostering major advances in the understanding of the processes occurring in the dynamic Earth.

The challenge? Turning multiple, often fragmented sources of information into something that can support timely, risk-informed decisions on the ground.

๐ŸŒ This is where EPOS can add another piece to the picture, providing access to multidisciplinary geoscientific resources that can complement local data and strengthen monitoring and analysis.

From observing a changing slope to getting information into the hands of decision-makers, this use case shows what it means to bridge the gap between science and action.

EQUIP-G just started the terrestrial use case 1 (TUC1) with an applied hydrological field experiment: an artificial water sprinkling experiment around 3 Exail absolute quantum (AQGs).

Monitored water volumes will be applied to a defined area around the gravimeters during night time in 4 consecutive nights during this week. The experiment takes place at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell, operated by Bundesamt fรผr Kartographie und Geodรคsie (BKG).

Research Infrastructures are not only supporting excellent science, they are helping turn knowledge, data and services into impact for Europeโ€™s green and digital transition.

As a distributed Research Infrastructure, EPOS's work is built around connecting communities, data, services and expertise across borders and disciplines, making solid Earth science resources more accessible, interoperable and reusable.

On 31 August, the ERIC Forum and EIROForum will bring Research Infrastructures, funders and policymakers together to share practical experiences and explore where stronger collaboration can take us next.

We look forward to the discussion and to exchanging perspectives across the European Research Infrastructure community.

As part of the ENVRI Community and through our involvement in ENVRI-Hub NEXT, EPOS contributes tools and expertise developed in the solid Earth domain to support collaboration across environmental research infrastructures.

The Catalogue of Services is one result of this shared effort, providing a standardised entry point to services across different research infrastructures and supporting their discovery and integration into scientific workflows.

A great example of how collaboration across research infrastructures can help lower barriers to multidisciplinary and transnational science.

Why combine them? Because different datasets can reveal different pieces of what is happening beneath our feet and bringing them together can help build a more complete picture of the subsurface.

๐ŸŒ From coastlines and opal mines to tsunamis, early warning in Eastern Africa, and now deep beneath the Andes, each stop in the series shows a different way researchers are putting EPOS data and services to work.

The EPOS Summer school was hosted at Espai Crร ter in Ajuntament d'Olot and supported by EPOS ON*, Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, Geociencias Barcelona del CSIC (GEO3BCN-CSIC), EPOS-ES, and Coordinaciรณn de EPOS Espaรฑa.

*The ๐„๐๐Ž๐’ ๐Žptimization and Evolutio๐ (๐„๐๐Ž๐’ ๐Ž๐) project is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action focused on optimizing and evolving the European Plate Observing System (EPOS), which the pan-European research infrastructure for solid Earth science. The EPOS ON project develops interoperable research services, FAIR data access, advanced computational workflows, and multidisciplinary Earth observation capabilities while strengthening international collaboration, user engagement, early-career researcher participation, and links with the private sector. The EPOS ON project outcomes support geohazard research, earthquake, volcano and tsunami monitoring, climate and environmental studies, and evidence-based disaster risk management.

Last week, EPOS was glad to be present alongside the Annals of Geophysics and Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia at their booth during ๐‹๐€๐‚๐’๐‚ 2026 โ€“ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž 6๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‹๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง ๐€๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ข๐›๐›๐ž๐š๐ง ๐’๐ž๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, held in Mexico City ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ

The event offered a valuable opportunity to connect with the seismological community and exchange knowledge across institutions, disciplines and continents.

Among the scientific contributions presented by INGV was "Proliferation of LP and Hybrid Seismicity at Vulcano (Italy) Triggered by Teleseismic Events. Hydrothermal system perturbation?"

The research examined an intriguing phenomenon at Vulcano Island, Italy: an increase in local volcanic seismicity following large distant (teleseismic) and moderate regional earthquakes.

Using network-coherence analyses, machine-learning detections and source-location methods, the researchers detected long-period (LP) and hybrid seismic events beneath the La Fossa caldera, home to an active shallow hydrothermal system. The observed increase in these signals following large teleseismic events suggests that the volcanic system may be particularly sensitive to external perturbations.

The findings highlight the importance of monitoring even subtle variations in volcanic seismicity and their potential implications for hazard assessment and risk management.

For EPOS, whose multidisciplinary research infrastructure facilitates the integrated use and reuse of solid Earth science data, products and facilities, opportunities for scientific exchange such as LACSC are an important part of strengthening connections across the international Earth science community.

Thank you to INGV and the Annals of Geophysics for welcoming EPOS at the booth, and to the LACSC 2026 community for a great week of scientific exchange!
