𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 EQUIP-G 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 🌍
Congratulations to the four teams selected through the first EQUIP-G Open Call, which will give researchers access to quantum gravimeters for field measurements across Europe.

The call attracted 19 applications from 13 European countries, reflecting strong interest in the possibilities offered by quantum gravimetry across the geophysics, geodesy and metrology communities.

The four selected projects will explore applications in:
🇫🇷 Landslide processes & hazard assessment | Géosciences Montpellier x OREME
🇸🇪 Geodesy & geodynamics | Lantmäteriet
🇱🇻 Underground gas storage monitoring | Latvian Geospatial Information Agency
🇨🇭 Fluid injection & earthquake physics | BedrettoLab at ETH Zürich

The field deployments will take place from November 2026 to January 2028, providing an opportunity to put shared quantum gravimetry infrastructure into practice and build experience for its future use at European scale. These field deployments mean new regions in Europe being monitored by quantum gravimetry producing important data which will be openly available in Europe’s research ecosystem following the FAIR principles.

As a partner in EQUIP-G, we at EPOS are pleased to contribute to this European collaboration and to the development of shared research infrastructure supporting new observations and understanding of the solid Earth.

Last week, the EARTH-AID community came together in Lugano 🇨🇭 to kick off 3️⃣ years of collaboration at the intersection of Earth science, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and social science.

Funded under Horizon Europe, EARTH-AID is developing a next-generation, AI-driven decision-support system for geohazards and georesources within the Destination Earth (DestinE) ecosystem. At its heart is 𝐆𝐄ographical 𝐎bject 𝐃etection, 𝐄xplained (𝐆𝐄𝐎𝐃𝐄), an explainable AI system designed to combine Digital Twins, federated data, real-time observations and scientific knowledge to support transparent and trustworthy impact assessments.

We at the European Plate Observing System are proud to be one of the 19 organisations contributing to this ambitious European collaboration. Our role builds directly on what we does best: making multidisciplinary solid Earth data, products and services more accessible, interoperable and reusable.

Within EARTH-AID, the European Plate Observing System leads 𝘞𝘗5 – 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘓𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, helping lay the data foundations needed for trustworthy, AI-enabled science.

This is also an exciting opportunity for us at EPOS to connect our established research infrastructure and community with the rapidly evolving possibilities of AI and Digital Twins and to help turn high-quality Earth science data into knowledge that can support better preparedness and decision-making.

We’re looking forward to the next 3️⃣6️⃣ months of collaboration with the EARTH-AID community.

Our 𝘌𝘗𝘖𝘚 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 2026 𝘜𝘴𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 is heading underground again, this time beneath the southern Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa.

In our latest video, Alejandra Neri, a PhD researcher at the Universitat de Barcelona and the 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐈𝐂𝐌-𝐂𝐒𝐈𝐂) 🇪🇸 starts with a fascinating question: how are structures deep within the Earth connected to the deformation we observe at the surface?

Alejandra has developed a 3D model of the lithosphere using passive seismology. But one model can only tell part of the story. 🧩

Through EPOS, she explores how that view from below can be connected with observations from above, bringing together seismicity, active faults and geodetic information to build a more complete picture of the forces shaping the region.

💻 There’s a workflow story here too: the goal is to bring these different observations together through open and reproducible Jupyter Notebook workflows, retrieving and standardising data from EPOS services so they can be analysed within a common framework.

And the journey doesn’t end in Iberia. Once established, Alejandra plans to transfer the same approach to her research in Northwest Africa, combining EPOS products with regional seismic datasets. 🌍

For this first edition, we’ll hear from two researchers working on different dimensions of natural hazard and risk:
🔹 Afifa Imtiaz of ETH Zürich will share insights from post-seismic reconnaissance following the 2023 Al Haouz earthquake in Morocco.
🔹 Achilleas Samaras of Democritus University of Thrace - (D.U.Th.) will take us through tsunami modelling, from generation to coastal inundation, and its relevance for hazard and risk assessment.

The Scientific Exchange series is intended to bring together research, ongoing developments, and perspectives relevant to ATTS Risk projects and objectives while creating an informal space for discussion and exchange across the community.

Solid Earth science brings together an extraordinary variety of resources: data, scientific services, instruments and sensors, software, computational resources and derived data products.

But bringing these resources together creates a challenge: different scientific communities may describe and organise their resources in different ways.
For researchers to discover and use them across disciplines, we need a common language. This is the idea behind 𝑬𝑷𝑶𝑺-𝑫𝑪𝑨𝑻-𝑨𝑷.

Developed through years of collaborative work within the EPOS community, EPOS-DCAT-AP provides a consistent way of describing the diverse research resources that make up the EPOS ecosystem.

In simple terms, consistent descriptions help scientific resources to be discovered across disciplines and exposed through a single access point — connecting communities and making research resources more accessible.

We are therefore very pleased to see EPOS-DCAT-AP featured by Interoperable Europe's SEMIC Support Center in the EU Academy course “DCAT-AP and its variations,” as one of the existing domain-specific extensions of DCAT-AP. For EPOS, seeing this work presented in an official European learning resource is a meaningful recognition of a journey that has been underway for around 10 years. And perhaps most importantly, it highlights something that can sometimes remain invisible behind technical terminology: interoperability is ultimately about helping knowledge travel across systems, across disciplines, and across borders.

The 2 day workshop that kicked off yesterday, brings together researchers, civil protection professionals, communicators, and public decision-makers to explore how uncertainty and natural hazards can be communicated clearly and credibly.

In her presentation, “𝘋𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦: 𝘵𝘳𝘢 𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘻𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢, 𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘪 𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵à” (“𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴: 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘌𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺”), Lilli explores an important distinction: an informed decision is not simply a decision “based on data”. Scientific evidence is fundamental, but real-world decisions also involve social, economic, and ethical considerations, values, priorities and trade-offs. Science provides the best available knowledge; it does not make the decision itself.

This is also where Research Infrastructures such as EPOS have an important role to play. By integrating data and expertise across countries and scientific communities, Research Infrastructures help create a trusted environment in which scientific evidence can be produced, integrated, verified and made usable -- supporting the journey from data to knowledge and, ultimately, informed decisions.

And making scientific evidence open comes with responsibility: alongside access, we need to communicate its context, provenance, limitations and uncertainty, so that it can be interpreted and reused appropriately.

A valuable discussion on how we can make scientific knowledge not only accessible, but genuinely useful and responsibly usable by society!
