Founded in 1894, Ghella is a leading Company in the construction of major infrastructure projects worldwide. With its unique skills and experience in underground works, Ghella is involved in the construction of many infrastructure projects such as subways, railways, motorways and major roads, significant water and hydraulic works. Whilst still having its corporate office in Rome, Italy, the Company has most of its workload in the international markets, mostly in Oceania, Far East, Latin America and Europe. With its presence on a global scale with a workforce of over 3000 people with continuous training programs, the use of modern technologies combined with the development of innovative and up-to-date productive methods and a particular attention to safety and to environmental requirements, Ghella has completed complex engineering works that have contributed to its dynamic and steady growth and have converted the Company into a leader in mechanized excavation and tunnelling projects worldwide. Along with its presence in major infrastructure works, Ghella is involved in the renewable energies sector, developing, constructing and operating solar and hydroelectric plants, in Italy and in Central America, with more than 80 MW of installed capacity.

In March 2026, Olivo Barbieri undertook a new photographic campaign in São Paulo as part of the third edition of Ghella’s artist commission programme, curated by Alessandro Dandini de Sylva. The project focuses on the construction site of Metro Line 2 Section 2, one of the major infrastructure projects through which the city is reshaping its mobility network and redefining the relationship between the surface and the underground.

The work forms part of site specific, a project Barbieri began in 2003, and combines aerial photographs taken from a helicopter with images captured at ground level, exploring the relationship between the construction site, São Paulo’s architecture and its urban landscape.

This new commission continues the dialogue fostered by Ghella between contemporary photography and major infrastructure projects, inviting artists to offer their own independent perspectives on the transformation of the places and landscapes shaped by its construction sites.

During the first half of the 20th century, Ghella contributed to the development of some of the infrastructure that was transforming Italy.

Railways, tunnels and hydroelectric works were creating new connections and supporting the country’s modernization.

Among these projects was the Pettorano hydroelectric tunnel, alongside works on the expanding national railway network.

For Ghella, infrastructure has always meant more than construction: it means creating connections that can shape territories for generations.

In 1907, Adolfo Ghella was working on the railway connecting Hong Kong and Canton.
One of the project’s greatest challenges was the Beacon Hill Tunnel, where exceptionally hard rock was slowing excavation and increasing costs.
Adolfo proposed sinking a vertical shaft to create additional excavation fronts and accelerate the works.
The solution helped overcome one of the most difficult sections of what was, at the time, the largest civil engineering project undertaken in Asia.

More than a century later, the principle remains familiar: when conditions are complex, innovation begins with finding another way.

The Athens Metro Line 3 extension to Piraeus, and the opening of the three stations called “Maniatika,” “Piraeus,” and “Dimotiko Theatro”, were announced by the AVAX-Ghella-Alstom consortium on 7 October 2022. The first three stations, “Nikaia,” “Korydallos,” and “Ag. Varvara” had been completed two years earlier. At the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, congratulated all parties involved for completing the project so timely. He pointed out that Greece had set a benchmark for constructing projects similar to this metro, in showing that infrastructure like this can be built whilst still prioritizing cultural heritage. This project will ease traffic congestion in Greece’s largest port and provide a link to Athens International Airport in under an hour.

It begins with Domenico Ghella, born in 1837 near Milan, whose work and travels took him far beyond Italy, at a time when some of the world’s most ambitious infrastructure projects were taking shape.
That early willingness to explore new places, face unfamiliar challenges and learn through experience would become a defining trait of the generations that followed.
A pioneering mindset that still shapes the way we build today.
