Founded in 1894, Ghella is a leading Company in the construction of major infrastructure projects worldwide. With its unique skills and experience in underground works, Ghella is involved in the construction of many infrastructure projects such as subways, railways, motorways and major roads, significant water and hydraulic works. Whilst still having its corporate office in Rome, Italy, the Compan

y has most of its workload in the international markets, mostly in Oceania, Far East, Latin America and Europe. With its presence on a global scale with a workforce of over 3000 people with continuous training programs, the use of modern technologies combined with the development of innovative and up-to-date productive methods and a particular attention to safety and to environmental requirements, Ghella has completed complex engineering works that have contributed to its dynamic and steady growth and have converted the Company into a leader in mechanized excavation and tunnelling projects worldwide. Along with its presence in major infrastructure works, Ghella is involved in the renewable energies sector, developing, constructing and operating solar and hydroelectric plants, in Italy and in Central America, with more than 80 MW of installed capacity.

🌍 ⌛ Every underground project tells a different story. What connects them is our experience.

Over the years we have completed over 190 tunnels worldwide: 322 km using TBMs, 261 km with conventional methods and 22 km through pipejacking.

Different technologies, one constant approach: delivering reliable infrastructure for communities.

What is a TBM?

A Tunnel Boring Machine is not just a machine — it’s a masterpiece of engineering.

Designed to excavate tunnels for metros, roads, railways, and hydraulic infrastructure, TBMs operate with remarkable precision, efficiency, and minimal impact on the surrounding environment. These giants work continuously, shaping the underground world that supports modern mobility.

At Ghella, tunnelling is our core expertise. Over the years, we have delivered — and continue to deliver — some of the most complex and strategic infrastructure projects worldwide, leveraging deep experience in TBM operations.

To date, we have operated more than 96 TBMs.

Among them, “Partenope” stands out: with a diameter of 13.46 meters, it is the largest TBM we have ever deployed. Today, it is at work on the Battipaglia–Romagnano Lot 1A, part of the Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed rail line — one of Italy’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

Because building underground means building the future.

💬 What is your professional background and what inspired you to join Ghella?

I have been with Ghella for just over two years, and this is my very first work experience. I started out as an intern on the Brenner Base Tunnel site, where I was fortunately able to write my Master’s thesis and explore the fascinating world of underground excavation.
Now I am working as a TBM engineer, still on the same project, and we are all looking forward to a major milestone: the final breakthrough of TBM Flavia, which is nearing the end of its excavation.

On the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2026, dedicated to the theme of “Psychosocial work environments: a pathway to healthy workers and thriving organisations”, we reaffirm our commitment to people’s wellbeing.

At Ghella, safety is not only about physical protection, but also about mental health, quality of relationships and work-life balance.

Across our projects worldwide, we promote initiatives that support people’s wellbeing: from structured programmes and leadership training on mental health in Australia and New Zealand, to campaigns on sleep quality and fatigue management, as well as social activities in Norway, and initiatives supporting physical activity and work-life balance in Italy.

From daily actions to structured systems, we continue to build healthier, more inclusive and sustainable workplaces.
Building infrastructure also means taking care of the people who make it possible.

💬 What is the most stimulating aspect of your work?

I would say there are two aspects: first of all, the international component, as my role requires me to interact with colleagues in different countries; and secondly – no less importantly – continuous training in the field.
I learn new things every day, thanks to the incredible know-how of the people I work and collaborate with. Each of our projects is like a giant universe, and every single one is unique – it is because each has its own special
characteristics that I am always acquiring new information – both technical and managerial.
