LAVINIA () è il programma d’arte contemporanea ideato da Ghella per la Loggia dei vini nel parco di Villa Borghese, un padiglione secentesco per i ricevimenti estivi dove un tempo si servivano vini pregiati e sorbetti. Il suo nome è un omaggio a Lavinia Fontana, tra le prime artiste professioniste riconosciute nella storia dell’arte. A cura di Salvatore Lacagnina, LAVINIA nasce per dialogare con il restauro della Loggia, donato da Ghella alla città di Roma e realizzato con la cura scientifica della Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali (). Con la prossima inaugurazione di LAVINIA giovedì 11 giugno, si conclude il percorso di tre anni di restauro della Loggia: finalmente il padiglione seicentesco torna accessibile al pubblico nella sua interezza.

What is a TBM?

A Tunnel Boring Machine is not just a machine — it’s a masterpiece of engineering.

Designed to excavate tunnels for metros, roads, railways, and hydraulic infrastructure, TBMs operate with remarkable precision, efficiency, and minimal impact on the surrounding environment. These giants work continuously, shaping the underground world that supports modern mobility.

At Ghella, tunnelling is our core expertise. Over the years, we have delivered — and continue to deliver — some of the most complex and strategic infrastructure projects worldwide, leveraging deep experience in TBM operations.

To date, we have operated more than 96 TBMs.

Among them, “Partenope” stands out: with a diameter of 13.46 meters, it is the largest TBM we have ever deployed. Today, it is at work on the Battipaglia–Romagnano Lot 1A, part of the Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed rail line — one of Italy’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

Because building underground means building the future.

💬 What is your professional background and what inspired you to join Ghella?

I have been with Ghella for just over two years, and this is my very first work experience. I started out as an intern on the Brenner Base Tunnel site, where I was fortunately able to write my Master’s thesis and explore the fascinating world of underground excavation.
Now I am working as a TBM engineer, still on the same project, and we are all looking forward to a major milestone: the final breakthrough of TBM Flavia, which is nearing the end of its excavation.
