Med-TSO is the Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (TSOs) for electricity, operating the High Voltage Transmission Networks

Med-TSO members share the primary objective of promoting the creation of a Mediterranean energy market, ensuring its optimal functioning through the definition of common methodologies, rules and practices for optimizing the operation of the existing infrastructures and facilitating the development of new ones. Med-TSO contributes to the achievement of this objective by promoting:

• the coordination among the Med-TSO Countries of their National Transmission Network Development Plans and of their Power System operation, studying the development of an integrated, secure and sustainable Mediterranean Power System and promoting cross-border projects aiming at facilitating the integration of new energy sources (especially from RES), increasing security and quality of power supply;

• the use of common criteria and harmonized, transparent and non-discriminatory technical rules for guaranteeing the interoperability of the interconnected Power Systems;

• training, knowledge sharing and technical assistance in the Region, facilitating the exchange of information, analyses and experiences among the Associates, including the R & D sector;

• enhanced communication and consultation with stakeholders for improving TSOs operation transparency and facilitating the public acceptance of transmission infrastructures;

• the cooperation among the Mediterranean TSOs and coordinated approach towards the Institutions (in particular with the association of the Mediterranean Regulators for energy, MEDREG, and the European Network of TSOs for electricity, ENTSO-E);

• the role of TSOs at regional level, analyzing and taking common positions on issues that can have an impact on the development and operation of transmission systems;

Over the past two days, our Secretary General participated in two different panels at Egypt Energy. In his remarks, he emphasized that the next phase of the energy transition won't be defined by new targets, but by the ability to deliver infrastructure, regulation, and cooperation at the speed of investment.

🌍 Last week our Secretary General Angelo Ferrante participated in Medreg - Mediterranean Energy Regulators’s “Regulation of Cross-Border Interconnections and Infrastructure” meeting in Milan, organized following the UAE’s recent adhesion to MEDREG, with the attendance of a high-level leadership delegation from the UAE.

During the session “Mediterranean interconnections: the role of Med-TSO and TSOs” he presented our Association, and the people involved, he showed our goals, past and present projects and explained how we manage to achieve them. He also focused on the role of cross border energy infrastructures, highlighting how their success strongly depends on more than competitive pricing and how clear risk allocation, strong governance, and effective contract management are essential to deliver reliable and resilient interconnections. He also underlined the high interest of Med-TSO to strengthen more and more the cooperation with the GCC institutions and companies.

⚡ Navigating Power System Security: New Operational Challenges, System Failures, and System Strengthening Strategies for Mediterranean TSOs

As the energy transition accelerates across the Mediterranean, integrating massive Renewable Energy Sources (RES) brings crucial operational security challenges to the forefront. Under TEASIMED 3 Project, Med-TSO convened operational experts and control room managers from Mediterranean Transmission System Operators for a technical workshop, kindly hosted by TEİAŞ, to share lessons from recent grid incidents and strengthen regional stability.

Key highlights from the updated agenda:

🔸 Operational Challenges: Pinpoint power system security challenges stemming from the Energy Transition, high variable RES pe*******on, and the electrification of consumption based on international benchmarks and Med-TSO member practices.
🔹 Incident Root-Cause Analysis: Comprehensive technical reviews of major recent power system disturbances, including the 2024 South-East Europe grid incident, the April 2025 Iberian Peninsula blackout, and the 2026 Turkish power system separation from the ENTSO-E Continental Power System.
🔸 Grid Upgrades Recommendation: Formulate actionable recommendations for Mediterranean TSOs to identify, prioritize, and embed necessary power system upgrades into national plans.

Med-TSO is pleased to announce that the Secretary General Angelo Ferrante is partecipating to the upcoming 16th Dii Desert Energy Leadership Summit, taking place in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Under this year’s theme, “Clean Energy: Bridging Continents, Connecting Markets,” our Secretary General, Ferrante, today will represent Med-TSO on the Top Executive Panel: International Cooperation for Integrated Energy Systems (Renewables, Storage & Interconnectivity).

In this panel he will discuss energy system transformation in EU–MENAT interconnected energy systems, focusing on the role of large-scale renewable deployment, battery energy storage systems, and cross-border infrastructure in enabling resilient regional energy trading and system stability.

We look forward to exchanging insights on building an interconnected, resilient energy future for the region.

Our journey began with the aim of building a platform for multilateral cooperation in the Mediterranean electricity sector — identifying new infrastructure projects and increasing renewable energy integration. Through Mediterranean Project 1 & 2 and TEASIMED 1 & 2, we built credibility as a qualified, professional and reliable reference body in the region. Today, with TEASIMED 3, we're consolidating these achievements while preserving the cooperative spirit among our Members.

🌍 Strengthening Winter Grid Resilience Across the Mediterranean

This week in Tunisia, Med-TSO, with the support of Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz, successfully hosted a technical workshop focused on implementing and evaluating the Winter Outlook Adequacy Assessment for 2026/2027.

The event brought together our experts of the Adequacy Study Team, in the frame of our TC Operation, for three days of intense technical collaboration:

🔹 Day 1: Hands-on training on the Trapunta software

🔹 Days 2 & 3: Collaborative analysis of input data and in-depth discussions on assessment results to evaluate the adequacy of Mediterranean power systems for the upcoming winter
