Med-TSO - Mediterranean Transmission System Operators Med-TSO is the Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (TSOs) for electricity, operating the High Voltage Transmission Networks

Med-TSO members share the primary objective of promoting the creation of a Mediterranean energy market, ensuring its optimal functioning through the definition of common methodologies, rules and practices for optimizing the operation of the existing infrastructures and facilitating the development of new ones. Med-TSO contributes to the achievement of this objective by promoting:

• the coordinati

on among the Med-TSO Countries of their National Transmission Network Development Plans and of their Power System operation, studying the development of an integrated, secure and sustainable Mediterranean Power System and promoting cross-border projects aiming at facilitating the integration of new energy sources (especially from RES), increasing security and quality of power supply;

• the use of common criteria and harmonized, transparent and non-discriminatory technical rules for guaranteeing the interoperability of the interconnected Power Systems;

• training, knowledge sharing and technical assistance in the Region, facilitating the exchange of information, analyses and experiences among the Associates, including the R & D sector;

• enhanced communication and consultation with stakeholders for improving TSOs operation transparency and facilitating the public acceptance of transmission infrastructures;

• the cooperation among the Mediterranean TSOs and coordinated approach towards the Institutions (in particular with the association of the Mediterranean Regulators for energy, MEDREG, and the European Network of TSOs for electricity, ENTSO-E);

• the role of TSOs at regional level, analyzing and taking common positions on issues that can have an impact on the development and operation of transmission systems;

Today, Angelo Ferrante Secretary General of Med-TSO joined the Festival dell'Energia in Lecce, organized by WEC Italia - Comitato Italiano del World Energy Council and Conseil Français de l'Énergie - World Energy Council France, to discuss the vital role of international cooperation as part of Panel II: Mediterranean and Transatlantic Perspectives. The discussion was focused on:

🔹New Corridors | Strengthening the Euro-Mediterranean HV transmission infrastructure

🔹Flexibility | to manage RES intermittency and climate change phenomena

🔹Coordination | Establishing harmonized rules to ensure and reliable integration and cross-border power flows.

Euro-MED integration is no longer optional—it is the prerequisite for a secure and resilient transition

🌍 Today our Secretary General, Ferrante, participated in the CEE-WB Energy, Infrastructure and Industrial Security Forum 2026, at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia, organized by Serbia, Est Europa , Privredna komora Srbije, and GreenHill Advisory.

In his intervention he pointed out how the grids are the backbone for trading and decarbonization, as well as flexibility and resilience providers. TSOs must lead this three-winning transition (decarbonisation, digitalisation, resilience) by developing more and more an integrated system-of systems approach. The challenges in front of us are Regulatory Alignment, Technical Integration and Financial Innovation.

In answering how to make the region more integrated, more flexible, and more financeable he also recalled the EU T-MED Initiative, supported by Med-TSO with its TEASIMED3 project; T-MED will help to accelerate renewable energy and clean technology cooperation between the EU and its Southern Mediterranean partners, and it includes also non-EU Balkan countries.

A resilient energy future depends on strategic partnerships and a shared vision for security and sustainability.

🔸Drafting the Future of Mediterranean Power Systems🔸

Med-TSO successfully launched the technical phase of the TEASIMED 3 project with a series of joint meetings held in Tunis from May 19 to 21. Experts from four Technical Committees - Planning, Economic Studies & Scenarios, Regulation & Institutions, Operation - collaborated to finalize the Project Initiation Documents (PIDs).

Key Focus Areas Defined:
🔸Operation: Developing a structured and detailed contribution to the PID.
🔹Regulatory & Institutional Frameworks: Aligning the project scope to meet objectives such as enhanced RES integration, system adequacy, flexibility, and the development of necessary regulatory and institutional structures.
🔸Long-Term Vision: Establishing a forward-looking strategy for the Mediterranean power systems, extending up to the year 2050.
🔹 Planning: focused on establishing the "Rules of Engagement" for the new project phase.

These crucial meetings represent a major step in Med-TSO’s mission to foster regional cooperation and support the development of a more resilient and integrated Mediterranean energy market.

🌍 Advancing the Mediterranean Energy Transition: Key Takeaways from the GO15 & Med-TSO Technical Forum! ⚡

On May 6th, we proudly co-organized a technical forum alongside GO 15, hosted by ΑΔΜΗΕ - IPTO in Athens. The event focused on tackling two critical challenges for the future of our power grids: Climate Change Resilience and the massive power demands of modern Data Centers.

🔹 Panel 1 - Climate Change and Energy Resilience: Moderated by Med-TSO Secretary General Angelo Ferrante, the panel explored how TSOs can strengthen grid resilience and cross border coordination while managing high shares of variable RES under increasingly extreme climate conditions. We were proud to have strong representation from Med-TSO leadership, including Vice-Presidents Theodoros Tsakiris (IPTO) and Mario Sisinni (Terna), alongside Enas Salah (EETC).

🔹 Panel 2 - Powering the Digital Backbone: Integrating Data Centres into Grid and Spatial Planning: Moderated by GO15 Secretary General Bruno Meyer, the panel focused on how coordinated planning can ensure that new data centre clusters are both technically feasible and aligned with regional energy transition objectives.

The cooperation with stakeholders in events like this reflects Med-TSO’s core vision: to be a competent and proactive guide for European and Mediterranean institutions towards the creation of a fully integrated, resilient Mediterranean energy market. 🤝
