Last Monday, we joined Schneider Electricc at their Innovation Hub in Casavatore HQ in Naples for a high-level discussion on the future of renewables and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) with the participation of Nicola Armaroli and Enel Groupoup.
As the integration of intermittent renewable energy becomes the ultimate hurdle for both the grid and hard-to-abate sectors, Magaldi brought a different strategic perspective to the table: Thermal Energy Storage (TES).

While traditional chemical batteries address grid-specific demands, our (Magaldi Thermal Energy Storage) system – based on patented fluidized sand bed technology - tackles the biggest bottleneck for energy-intensive industries: decarbonizing high-temperature process heat.
MATES offers a concrete opportunity to turn energy price volatility into a competitive advantage by decoupling electricity procurement from steam production.

It soaks up cheap, excess, intermittent green electricity during peak sun and wind hours, stores it, and delivers it back as steady, high-temperature thermal energy 24/7.
This is a proven industrial reality built on strong partnerships. Schneider Electric was instrumental in this journey, supplying key technological components for our first-of-its-kind industrial-scale MATES plant, proudly inaugurated last September 2025 in Buccino (Salerno, Italy).
A big thank you to the Schneider Electric team for hosting such a timely event and fostering the exact kind of dialogue that energy-intensive industries desperately need!

Volatility in energy prices, geopolitical tensions and growing industrial competition are pushing governments and businesses to rethink the relationship between energy, security of supply and industrial competitiveness.
In an interview published by Fortune Italia, Raffaello Magaldi, Managing Director, Global Operations & Product Development at , explores this challenge, highlighting the strategic role of thermal energy storage and the contribution such technologies can offer to both industrial competitiveness and decarbonization.
Today, more than 70% of industrial heat demand is still met by fossil fuels, while public debate continues to focus primarily on electricity. Yet it is precisely in this domain that Europe’s ability to reconcile decarbonization, energy security, and industrial competitiveness will be determined.
In this context, (Magaldi Green Thermal Energy Storage) represents a concrete solution. By enabling the storage of renewable energy in the form of high-temperature heat, MGTES allows industries to decouple energy procurement from consumption, enhancing cost control, operational continuity and flexibility. Most importantly, it offers a viable pathway to replace fossil fuels in industrial heat processes, one of the hardest sectors to abate.
Thermal energy storage thus emerges not only as a technology, but as a key enabling industrial infrastructure. In a context of increasing volatility and geopolitical uncertainty, solutions like MGTES can become a strategic lever, supporting industrial decarbonization while strengthening Europe’s resilience and long-term competitiveness.

Waste-to-Energy is a €30+ billion industry in Europe. And yet, most plants still leave value on the table by focusing only on energy production rather than maximizing value.

Every year, Europe produces ~𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝘀𝗵 (IBA). Hidden inside is 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟱% 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀, including ferrous, non-ferrous, and rare/precious fractions. A large share of these metals remains under-recovered because plants have been designed for disposal, not for recovery.

Now the rules are changing:
• Landfilling is becoming economically and politically unsustainable
• The EU Waste Framework Directive (2018/851) pushes hard on recovery of secondary raw materials and resource efficiency
• The Critical Raw Materials Act (2024) turns waste streams into strategic supply sources

At Magaldi, we’re helping WtE plants transition to a Waste-to-Materials (W2M) model with the (Magaldi Dry Ash Management) system.

By adopting a dry approach to IBA extraction and valorization, bottom ash becomes a second value stream:
• Up to +𝟱𝟬% 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, with higher quality (no re-oxidation)
• Production of 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗲 in construction applications

So, the real question is not technical but strategic: 𝐴𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑊𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒-𝑡𝑜-𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡…𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑊𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒-𝑡𝑜-𝑀𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚?

Welcoming Luca Ventorino and Enrico Bonacci from the Technical Secretariat of the Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica to our MGTES plant in Buccino was a valuable opportunity for open and constructive exchange on the role of innovation in advancing the energy transition.

The visit offered a tangible demonstration of how thermal energy storage can address one of the most critical challenges of the transition: the decarbonization of industrial heat. This is particularly relevant for hard-to-abate sectors, where processes require high temperatures and continuous operation, still largely dependent on fossil fuels.

Solutions like are designed to meet this need—converting electricity into programmable, high-temperature heat available 24/7—while contributing to a more flexible, resilient, and efficient energy system.

Moments like these are key to strengthening the dialogue between institutions and industry, aligning regulatory frameworks with technological progress, and accelerating the deployment of solutions that make the transition both sustainable and industrially viable.

In the race to Green Steel, scrap logistics can make - or break - performance.

A 320-ton Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) only drives at its best when the scrap handling system keeps pace with its demand.

That’s why Magaldi has been selected for a record-breaking EAF project in Japan, providing a 750 t/h scrap handling system designed to meet the furnace’s full charging cycle requirements.

At the core of the solution:
● Six heavy-duty feeders with integrated static weighing for optimized performance and high-impact resistance
● A Superbelt® conveyor (3.4 m wide × 112 m long) collecting the metal receipt
● A secondary 3.4 m wide inclined conveyor feeding the preheating system.

Scrap logistics is no longer the background but the engine that bridge decarbonization goals with operational reality.

The most promising “Green Steel” hubs – with abundant renewable energy and access to green hydrogen – are often thousands of kilometers away from the main steelmaking plants.
Thanks to its compact structure, low reactivity, and strong resistance to oxidation than loose DRI, HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron) is becoming the “logistics enabler” for Green Steel, allowing steelmakers to “import” decarbonization.
But as global demand grows and investments in new briquetting plants and line expansions accelerate, attention is shifting to a critical step in the HBI value chain: briquette cooling.
Instead of abrupt, immersive quenching, typical of conventional solutions, Magaldi has developed a controlled cooling system that uses gradual, non-immersive evaporative cooling on an enclosed steel belt conveyor.

Why this is a strategic lever for HBI plants:
✅ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Real-time water regulation and temperature sensing prevent thermal shock, preserving briquette integrity, density, and consistency - key factors for optimal performance in the EAF.
✅ 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 - All sensitive components (i.e., bearings) are kept outside the hot zone. No chains. No bushings. No sprockets. Just continuous, low-maintenance operation.
✅ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 - By moving away from immersion cooling, the system reduces water consumption and contaminated water streams, aligning with modern ESG and sustainability goals.

With a steelmaking model dominated by Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) for more than 80% of total production capacity, Latin America - particularly Mexico - is setting the pace in the Green Steel Transition.

At 2026, Magaldi Technologies LLC will show how to convert complex operational hurdles in bulk material handling into strategic assets.

Our advanced solutions for scrap handling, hot DRI charging, and HBI cooling are engineered to deliver:
✅ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 – Process broader and more complex scrap mixes without downtime, impact damage, thermal stress, or material bridging.
✅ 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 – Reduce EAF power consumption through efficient hot charging of DRI/HBI, improving thermal efficiency and shortening tap-to-tap times.
✅ 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 – Ensure continuous, trouble-free operation, lower maintenance costs, and improved overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

By implementing these advantages, steelmakers can directly address the critical operational pressures currently facing the steel market:
• Supply Chain Volatility – Managing high-quality scrap shortages by seamlessly balancing the charge mix between scrap and DRI/HBI
• Energy Efficiency – Offsetting rising kWh/t costs that threaten margins by optimizing EAF thermal performance
• Trade Policy & Nearshoring – Strengthening domestic market share through superior operational flexibility, allowing producers to resist low-cost dumping and leverage the nearshoring advantage.
