📺 NBS360 made it onto Italian national TV!

On 22 July, RAI TGR Sardegna covered the growing risk of desertification in Sardinia, focusing on Gallura and the area around Limbara, where soil degradation has nearly doubled in twenty years (from 35% to 65% of the territory).
Prof. Pier Paolo Roggero of NRD Nucleo di Ricerca sulla Desertificazione spoke about how research and good land management practices can help reverse this trend — and mentioned NBS360, the project just launched with EU/PRIMA funding, coordinated by ΕΛΓΟ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ - ELGO Dimitra (Greece), dedicated to nature-based solutions against drought and desertification.

In western Europe, precipitation has not shown a significant long-term decline — yet atmospheric evaporative demand has surged, making the observed agricultural drought conditions roughly 80 times more likely than in a climate 1.4°C cooler. A finding that shifts the focus from rainfall alone to the combination of heat and soil moisture — a theme central to water resource management in the Mediterranean.

When drought hits, healthy soils can make a real difference. 🌱

Rich in organic matter and teeming with life, healthy soils act as natural water reservoirs. They absorb more rainfall and release it slowly to plants during dry spells, buffering the effects of water scarcity.
Millions of organisms, from microbes to earthworms, help make this possible. Their activity builds soil structure, allowing water to soak in rather than run off the surface, and helps plant roots reach water and nutrients when conditions are driest.

Soil health also affects resilience to erosion. Protecting the fertile topsoil layer means retaining the moisture and nutrients that plants depend on, even as drought pressures increase across parts of Europe. 💧
Investing in soil health is one of the most practical ways to build long-term resilience to drought and climate extremes.

🌍 💧The University of Cagliari is strengthening its role as a leader in international research and environmental sustainability by leading the Italian pilot site of the European project NBS360 (A Transformative Innovation Ecosystem for Resilient Water Management through Scalable Nature-Based Solutions in the Mediterranean).
Funded under the prestigious European PRIMA programme, the project aims to revolutionize water resource management through Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) — solutions rooted in nature to make territories more resilient to climate change.
🛠️ What will UniCa do?
Under the scientific responsibility of Prof. Alberto Carletti, the University will lead the activities of the Italian demonstration site located in Làcani, a key area for developing climate-resilient silvopastoral systems through the use of cutting-edge technologies such as:
📡 Smart sensors for real-time monitoring.
🤖 Artificial Intelligence and predictive models (Digital Twins).
🤝 Participatory governance processes to actively engage local communities.
The UniCa team will work alongside an international consortium of 13 partners from 8 Mediterranean countries to transform water management, combat drought, and protect ecosystems. A concrete step toward a more sustainable future, where science and digital innovation meet the protection of nature.

Our Kick-off Meeting is done — and NBS360 is now in motion! Thirteen partners, eight countries, seven demonstration sites across the Mediterranean came together in Thessaloniki to lay the groundwork for three years of work on nature-based solutions for water resilience. From digital twins to sensor networks, from biodiversity monitoring to community engagement, every site left with a clear roadmap for the months ahead.

🌱It's official: NBS360 has kicked off!
Today and tomorrow, 24–25 June, partners from 8 countries across the Mediterranean and beyond are gathering in Thessaloniki, Greece, for the project's Kick-off Meeting. Over the next 36 months, NBS360 will co-design, test, and scale Nature-Based Solutions for water resilience across 7 demonstration sites — not as a top-down technical fix, but as a living, learning system built together with the communities who depend on these landscapes every day. Coordinated by ELGO-Dimitra (Greece), with 13 partners and €2.93 million in funding from PRIMA.
