How do you create ideal acoustic comfort inside a place of worship? ⛪🔊
Religious buildings are among the most complex environments to design from an acoustic standpoint: large volumes, intricate shapes, and hard, reflective surfaces often risk making speech unintelligible.
The solution? Involve acoustic consulting right from "day zero"!
Together with architects Emilio Vitale and Adriana Pidalà, we worked on the project for the Santa Maria del Carmine Complex in Santa Maria la Ca**tà (Naples), starting directly from the initial design competition.
Instead of "adding" acoustic corrections after construction was finished, we integrated the treatments directly into the architectural language itself:
Walls featuring timber slats with sound-absorbing porous backing for acoustic control;
Monolithic acoustic plaster and seamless ceilings to control reverberation while maintaining a fluid, continuous aesthetic;
A directional column array sound system that focuses audio directly onto the congregation, minimizing unwanted reflections off hard surfaces.
A project that proves how technical expertise, technology, and aesthetics can work hand in hand to create welcoming, functional, and inspiring spaces.
