The particularly high temperatures experienced this season highlight the importance of monitoring microclimatic conditions and identifying the areas most exposed to heat stress.

For this reason, we are resharing the CoolNUS–BEAM case study developed at the National University of Singapore (NUS), a concrete example of how environmental data can support space planning and heat stress risk management.

To create a campus-scale microclimate digital twin, APAQ Group installed:
📍 40 LSI LASTEM weather stations
— 32 at ground level;
— 8 on building rooftops.

Each station is equipped with an All-In-One sensor measuring air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, as well as a pyranometer for global solar radiation.

The network also includes 🏗️ 3 meteorological towers, each 15 m high, with air temperature and relative humidity sensors installed every 3 m to analyse vertical profiles.

The data are collected in the open BEAM digital platform www.coolnus-beam.sg, where they are transformed into interpolated maps, simulations and analyses of the campus climate zones.

This system helps researchers and infrastructure managers identify heat hotspots, assess mitigation strategies and plan interventions based on real-world data.

🌩️ When a storm is approaching, acting in time can make all the difference.

Lightning and severe thunderstorms can pose a risk to people, infrastructure, systems and operational continuity, especially in contexts where safety depends on the ability to anticipate critical weather conditions.

The LSI LASTEM lightning sensor estimates the distance of the storm front up to 40 km, providing timely information on the approach of atmospheric electrical activity.

Thanks to RF technology and an integrated intelligent algorithm, the sensor supports reliable detection, helps reduce false alarms and can be integrated into LSI LASTEM environmental monitoring systems.

✅ Early thunderstorm warning
✅ Support for the protection of people and infrastructure
✅ Useful monitoring for airports, ports, industrial sites, energy plants, agricultural areas, public spaces and sports facilities

A solution designed to make weather risk management more informed, timely and safe.

☀️Climate change is making the energy transition a concrete priority, and photovoltaics is one of the key technologies for producing energy in a more sustainable way.

To ensure efficient performance over time, however, it is essential to accurately monitor the operating conditions of the system: solar irradiance, air and module temperature, wind, precipitation, humidity, snow and soiling on the panels can directly affect energy yield.

Reference standards such as IEC 61724-1:2021 confirm the importance of continuous, reliable and comparable environmental data.

⚡️LSI LASTEM can provide weather stations, field systems installed on photovoltaic modules and sensors dedicated to measuring the main parameters that influence the performance of PV plants.

Among these, pyranometers play a central role in measuring solar, reflected and diffuse irradiance, with solutions compliant with ISO 9060:2018 in Class A, B and C.
📊To support measurement reliability, LSI LASTEM is an accredited laboratory according to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for air temperature, relative humidity, air speed and global irradiance.

Heat Stress at the FIFA World Cup 2026: Are hydration Breaks Adequate?

Climate conditions are becoming increasingly challenging for outdoor sports.
Rising temperatures, heat waves, humidity and intense solar radiation are now key risk factors for athletes’ health and event organization.

This is why heat stress is increasingly included in sports regulations and federation policies, with WBGT or other thermal stress indices used across several disciplines to support safer decision-making.
The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) combines measurements that represent the main environmental factors governing the body’s heat exchange with its surroundings: natural wet-bulb temperature (humidity and air movement), globe temperature (radiant heat), and air temperature.
This makes it a more objective and accurate method than air temperature alone.

In football, FIFA regulations and medical protocols already refer to WBGT and specific thresholds for heat risk management, including cooling breaks or match postponement in extreme conditions.
For the FIFA World Cup 2026, mandatory hydration breaks and discretionary cooling breaks have been introduced for all matches.
This is an important preventive step, but these breaks are not directly triggered by real-time WBGT measurements or field-specific WBGT thresholds.
The next step is clear: heat safety decisions should be based on objective, on-field, real-time measurements.

At LSI LASTEM, we provide dedicated WBGT monitoring solutions for sports venues, federations, clubs and event organizers, supporting safer competitions through reliable environmental data.

We’d like to reshare an interesting project that remains highly relevant today, especially considering the extreme climate conditions we are experiencing in this period. 🌡️

Extreme heat is an increasingly significant risk factor for those working in agriculture, both outdoors and in greenhouses. In this context, the Università degli Studi della Tuscia - Viterbo has launched an innovative project to monitor heat stress and support concrete prevention actions, as part of the national Agritech Center program. 🌿

👷🏽 This project integrates LSI LASTEM solutions, including fixed and portable WBGT weather stations, to monitor environmental conditions in real time and contribute to the development of more effective prevention strategies for those working in critical climate conditions.
