- La Nostra Pietra -
Suggestive nella loro semplicità espressiva, duttili nell'idoneità alla lavorazione ed alla trasformazione, irripetibili nei contenuti strutturali e cromatici dell'impiego, le pietre pugliesi hanno una storia di successo che non è meno importante, anche dal punto di vista promozionale, delle ottime caratteristiche tecnologiche, dei costi competitivi e delle prestigiose referenze internazionali. Le loro applicazioni architettoniche, che risalgono addirittura all' epoca megalitica e che ebbero grandi fioriture in quelle romanica e barocca, dimostrano come le pietre pugliesi possono superare la prova del tempo, con prestazioni tecnologiche eccezionali. Oggi non si pretende una capacità d' impiego proiettata nei milenni : è l' economia di durata, intesa anche quale contenimento dei costi di manutenzione, che rimane una prerogativa di richiamo prioritario. Da questo punto di vista il calacare pugliese "è li che parla a chi lo vuol sentire" con l' evidenza dei fatti concreti : la sua capacità di inserimento, non solo nell' architettura degli interni ma anche nell' arredo funzionale e decorativo dello spazio urbano e talvolta dello stesso paesaggio, risulta suffragata da composizioni di alto valore artistico, alle quali lo scorrere dei secoli o dei millenni ha conferito un' ulteriore patina di qualità. Del resto, la maggioranza dei marmi pugliesi e la quasi totalità di quelli del bacino di Trani hanno una resistenza, dopo cicli termici, superiore a quella semplice, per non parlare della competitività del modulo di dilatazione e del coefficiente di imbibizione. Ciò conferma che il passare del tempo, lungi dal danneggiarli o dal corroderli, ne accresce il valore di struttura vivacizzando in modo particolare il suo effetto ornamentale.
Il marmo di Puglia, quindi, è un materiale completo nel vero senso della parola perchè risulta idoneo all' inserimento in ogni tipo di edilizia, sia che si voglia raggiungere un effetto finemente decorativo, sia che s' intenda puntare sulla valorizzazione dell' elemento strutturale. Le grandi applicazioni architettoniche del passato evidenziano questa prerogativa in una maniera quasi icastica, sottolineando che la pietra locale è si eclettica, ma non per questo disponibile a compromessi: si tratta perciò di un materiale di autentica nobiltà.
Alle stesse conclusioni si perviene d’altronde, esaminando gli impieghi più antichi, quali quelli dei dolmen megalitici, dei menhir e degli insediamenti preistorici tra cui non si può non ricordare almeno il “Centopietre” di Leuca o i templi dorici di Taranto, delle costruzioni romane di Lecce, delle rovine di Egnazia, dell’ edicola di Fasano, degli ipogei di Canosa. L’elenco potrebbe continuare, ma non sarebbe significativo se non nella conferma di un dato di fatto incontestabile : l’antica tradizione pugliese che, anche da questo punto di vista, non appare seconda ad altre, traendone un’ ulteriore conferma della sua validità tecnologica e della sua singolare capacità di garantire la riuscita in ogni applicazione architettonica.

- Our Stone -
Puglia stones evoke an expressive simplicity. They possess a marked suitability for processing and working. They have unrepeatable structural and chromatic features when put to use. They have a success story, no less important even from a promotional point of view. They reveal first-rate technological characteristics. They are competitively priced. They enjoy high international reputation. The architectural uses of the stones even date back as far as the Megalithic period. Puglia stones also flourished greatly in the Romanesque and Baroque periods, demonstrating how they are able to withstand the rigours of time, due to their exceptional technological qualities. Nowdays, nobody expects materials to last for thousands of years; economic life, by which we also mean maintenance costs, remains one of the main qualities requested. From this point of view, Puglia limestone “speaks to he who wants to listen” with the evidence of concrete facts; its ability to be used not only for interior architecture but also for functional and decorative furnishing of urban areas, and sometimes of the urban landscape that is sustained by works of great artistic value; and the passing of tens, hundreds and thousands of years has given a further layer of quality to these works. On the other hand, most Puglia marble, and nearly all from the Trani basin, has a crushing strength after thermal cycles that is higher than the basic strength, not to mention the competitivity of the modulus of linear expansion and the coefficient of imbibition. This confirms that as time passes the structural value increases, enlivening the ornamental effect.
Puglia marble is therefore a material that can be termed “complete” in the true sense of the word. It is suitable to be included in every kind of building, both to give a decorative finishing effect and to make use of its structural qualities. The great architectural uses of the past, greatly emphasizes these outstanding features underlining that the local stone is certainly versatile, but not therefore ready for compromises. So we are dealing with a truly noble material.
The same conclusions can be made, on the other hand, examining the oldest uses – those of the Megalithic dolmen, the menhir, and the prehistoric settlements among which at least the “Centopietre” (Hundredstones) of Leuca must be mentioned. Here the structural function of the massello finds numerous horizontal uses. It would be impossible not to mention, also, the Doric temples of Taranto, the Roman buildings of Lecce, the ruins of Egnazia, the shrine of Fasano, the hypogea of Canosa, or the “laure” of Otranto – the unique medieval coenobia excavated directly into the actual rock that becomes a part of the hillside structure. The list could on further, but it would have little meaning except to confirm the by now irrefutable fact : the ancient traditions of Puglia stone. Even from this point of view, it seems to be second to none and gains yet another means of confirming its technological validity and its unique ability to guarantee success in every architectural use.
