Have you ever thought about how many hands your food, your parcel, or your favourite product passes through before it reaches you?
Packaging helps keep it safe along the way.📦

On 6 September, we will mark the first World Packaging Day, an initiative by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) to recognise packaging as a driver of progress.

Its impact can be seen in four key areas:
📦 Packaging for Progress — supporting health, safety and accessibility
🍃 Packaging Against Food Waste — keeping food fresher, for longer
📈 Packaging and Economic Growth — powering trade, logistics and e-commerce
♻️ Packaging and Sustainability — driving circularity and smarter design

Join us in celebrating World Packaging Day and the people behind the packaging that keeps our world moving.🌱

In cosmetic packaging, “protection” and “sustainability” are often treated as separate requirements. In practice, they don’t have to be.

Take the case of Endro, a French clean beauty brand built around natural formulations. Like many brands shipping fragile glass bottles, Endro needed reliable transit protection while ensuring its packaging remained aligned with its sustainability principles.
To address this challenge, Endro adopted BOTTA EcoPackaging’s Eco-Sleeve Elastic, a corrugated paper sleeve engineered specifically for fragile cosmetic containers.

The transition delivered three key outcomes:
✓ Reliable transit protection without plastic-based materials
✓ Reduced storage footprint through flat-pack design
✓ Stronger alignment between packaging design and brand positioning

Sustainable packaging is not a compromise on performance. The right design approach can deliver both protection and sustainability.

Technology is no longer a question of size. It is a question of readiness.

For decades, Italian SMEs have built their strength on expertise, flexibility, and the ability to adapt. These qualities remain essential, but today, they are being challenged by a faster, more complex industrial landscape.

Rising costs, skills shortages, stricter sustainability requirements, and global competition are pushing companies to rethink how they operate.

Digital technologies can become a powerful ally in this transition. Not as a replacement for people, but as a way to help businesses make better decisions, work more efficiently, and unlock new opportunities.

Yet many SMEs are still approaching digital transformation with caution. According to Eurostat data, AI adoption remains significantly higher among large companies (53%) compared with small businesses (15%).

This gap represents a challenge but also a great opportunity for Italian industry.

The companies that combine their experience and know-how with the right technologies will be better prepared to face the future.

In this excerpt from Lara Botta’s speech at Italian Waste Economy 2026, she shares her perspective on why innovation must become more accessible for businesses of all sizes.

What will be the biggest driver of change for SMEs in the coming years: technology, people, or new regulations?

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is bringing increased focus to packaging material selection, design, and evaluation across the supply chain.

For fresh-produce applications, the Eco-Paper Fruit Tray by BOTTA EcoPackaging is a molded pulp packaging option made from recycled paper. Its design helps manage moisture during storage, while the stackable structure supports handling and transportation requirements.

Material characteristics and application requirements are key considerations when developing packaging solutions for evolving market needs.

For decades, packaging was all about protecting products.
That's no longer the whole story. Brands today are paying closer attention to what their packaging is made of and how evolving regulations are shaping material choices.

On 12 August 2026, that question becomes a requirement. Under the EU's PPWR, food-contact packaging placed on the EU market must meet new PFAS limits, 25 ppb for individual substances, 250 ppb total, 50 ppm for polymeric PFAS.

As regulations continue to evolve, informed material decisions and a clear understanding of compliance expectations will become increasingly important across the packaging value chain.

Your packaging waste is not the end of the story.

With Eco-Paper Cushioning Bag, paper and cardboard waste generated within your own operations can be transformed into a new protective packaging solution, supporting a more resource-efficient packaging approach aligned with the objectives of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

How does it work?
1️⃣ Paper and cardboard waste from your facility are shredded into cushioning material.
2️⃣ The recycled paper material is filled into a paper-based bag, creating flexible protection for products.
3️⃣ The finished cushioning bag is placed inside shipping boxes to secure products during transport.

Discover how Eco-Paper Cushioning Bag can help optimize your packaging process with a more circular approach, link in the comments.

What if the way we design packaging could learn from nature?

Long before humans began designing solutions, nature had already perfected the art of protection.
- A shell shields what is inside without a single wasted layer.
- A fruit skin protects through its natural structure.
- A seed carries everything needed for a new beginning.

These examples remind us that effective design comes from understanding purpose, balance, and efficiency.

At BOTTA EcoPackaging, we take inspiration from these natural principles to rethink packaging solutions that balance protection, functionality, and thoughtful material use.

This World Nature Conservation Day, we reflect on how nature’s approach can inspire the way we design packaging for the future.
Which natural design principle inspires you the most?

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future opportunity, but a competitive advantage.

In this excerpt from our VP Lara Botta's speech at the Italian Waste Economy 2026 (organised by Il Sole 24 ORE and @24 ORE Eventi), she highlights a key challenge: While AI adoption is growing, only 15% of small businesses are currently considering it, compared with 53% of large companies.

For SMEs, this gap represents an opportunity to innovate, improve efficiency, and create value, not only from an economic perspective but also for environmental sustainability.

Innovation and sustainability go hand in hand, helping businesses become stronger, more resilient, and more competitive in a market that increasingly demands both.
