Just over one month after the deployment of this eco-sculpture on the seabed off Bogliasco, Italy, the first marine colonizers have already settled on its surface.

Small filter-feeding colonial organisms are beginning to cover the porous structure, while the artificial cavities are already providing shelter for species such as moray eels and scorpionfish. It is the very first step in the transformation of an artwork into a living reef.

The sculpture, depicting two hands protecting a hollow globe designed as an artificial reef, was engineered to combine art with ecological function. Every cavity, texture and surface was designed to encourage marine life to settle naturally and create new habitats over time.

This installation is part of the Posidonia Art Reef, an initiative promoted by the Posidonia Green Project within the European PartArt4OW programme, where art, science and local communities work together to support the regeneration of marine ecosystems.

Nature has started its work.

We are looking forward to documenting the evolution of this underwater ecosystem in the months and years ahead.

A beautiful video by Massimo Barlettani of the Accademia del Mare Ambiente of Monte Argentario filmed during the deployment and installation of our MD700 tiles for the restoration of Posidonia oceanica within the Casa Dei Pesci Argentario Project.

The tiles create a pleasant underwater pathway connecting the artificial reefs we developed as part of the Casa dei Pesci project.

The restoration process is carried out entirely by hand. It is painstaking work, as each tile contains 16 holes, and every single one must be planted with a Posidonia oceanica cutting.

Now we wait. Over the coming year, nature will do the rest, and next season we will be able to evaluate how successfully the seagrass has taken root and the impact of this restoration effort.

This video lasts about four minutes, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into the dedication and care behind restoring one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable marine ecosystems.

Twenty years ago, I imagined that 3D printing could build houses.

Today, the same technology has been entrusted with building life beneath the sea.

For many years, my work was dedicated to building for people.

Today, that same technology is beginning to build for nature.

Today, off the coast of Monte Argentario, Italy, the first five artificial reefs of the new Casa dei Pesci – Monte Argentario Underwater Park were successfully deployed.

Inspired by artworks from Rossella Siani, James Gardiner, David Lennon, Bathsheba Grossman, Alex Goad, and myself, these structures are not simply underwater sculptures. They have been designed as living habitats where marine life can settle, grow and thrive.

This achievement is the result of years of research, engineering, collaboration and the shared belief that technology can become a powerful tool for environmental restoration.

Among the deployed structures is the Fibonacci Reef, developed within the DeepReef Project, co-funded by the Tuscany Region, and validated through field trials carried out in collaboration with Agroittica Toscana.

I am especially proud that this underwater park includes a reef inspired by the work of Alex Goad, whose pioneering designs have become an international reference in the field of artificial reefs and marine habitat restoration.

My sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed to making this vision a reality: the engineers, divers, researchers, institutions, sponsors and marine professionals whose commitment made today possible.

Today we deployed only five structures.

But this is about far more than five reefs.

It is the beginning of a living underwater park, where art, engineering and science come together with one purpose: giving something back to the sea.

If, in a few years, these structures become thriving marine habitats, we will know that we have succeeded.

Because the greatest technology is not the one that builds the most.

It is the one that helps nature rebuild itself.

Oggi abbiamo immerso soltanto cinque strutture.

Here’s a little something I’d like to share with you. A few weeks ago at Maker Faire Sardinia, I had the pleasure of giving this short interview, where I talk about my journey, the story behind D-Shape, and some of the ideas that have driven me over the years.
It’s in Italian, sorry, but I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed sharing it.

Grazie Rossella.

I would like to express my special thanks to Professor Rossella Siani, architect, researcher, and educator, with whom I have had the privilege of collaborating over the past ten years.

As part of the Casa dei Pesci exhibition in Monte Argentario, dedicated to artificial reefs created using D-Shape technology, one of the featured works is a structure she designed, inspired by Voronoi geometries and capable of combining formal elegance, digital innovation, and ecological functionality.

The cavities and spatial articulations generated by this geometry are particularly well suited to providing shelter and microhabitats for numerous marine species, demonstrating how parametric design can make a tangible contribution to the regeneration of underwater ecosystems.

Rossella has supported this project with enthusiasm, expertise, and intellectual generosity since its earliest stages. Throughout these years, she recognized the potential of an idea that many considered impossible, continuously contributing her creativity, knowledge, and scientific insight.

On behalf of myself and everyone involved in bringing this initiative to life, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the passion, trust, and collaborative spirit she has shown throughout this extraordinary journey.

Thank you, Rossella.

A very special day for all of us.

Seeing the Posidonia Art Reef finally placed underwater is the result of months of work, collaboration, and shared passion. What started as an idea has now become a living project that combines art, innovation, and care for the marine environment.

A heartfelt thank you to Edoardo Brodasca and the entire Posidonia Green Festival team for their vision, energy, and determination in making this happen.

My gratitude also goes to the amazing D-Shape team, whose commitment and expertise helped turn this vision into reality.

We are proud to have contributed to a project that will not only inspire people, but also support the regeneration of marine ecosystems for years to come.

Congratulations to everyone who made this possible.
