Structural Design Spotlight

This project involved the structural design of a contemporary rear house extension, creating a larger and more functional living space within the existing property. The extension provides a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that improves the layout and connection to the rear garden.

The structural design included the necessary alterations to remove sections of the existing load-bearing wall and install new structural supports, enabling the creation of a generous open-plan space. Large glazed doors and a rooflight maximise natural daylight and strengthen the connection between the interior and the outdoor space.

The extension has been designed to complement the existing property while improving the flow and usability of the home. The completed project demonstrates how effective structural engineering can transform an existing house, creating a practical, modern living space that is well suited to everyday family life.

A great day yesterday at the Würth Chemical Anchor presentation! It was an incredibly informative and in-depth session, covering the technical aspects of chemical anchors with clear explanations and valuable industry insights. The hands-on demonstration gave everyone the opportunity to see the products in action and gain practical experience.

Here’s an update from our Portuguese office and an interesting look at alternative structural solutions.

An efficient alternative to traditional reinforced concrete retaining walls.
This basement project utilised a modular concrete retaining wall system instead of a conventional reinforced concrete retaining wall.
The use of interlocking precast concrete blocks offered several advantages:
- Faster installation
- Reduced labour requirements
- Minimal formwork
- Lower embodied carbon compared to a fully reinforced concrete solution
- Cost and programme benefits
When ground conditions and loading requirements permit, modular retaining wall systems can provide a robust, practical and efficient alternative to traditional RC construction.
Engineering is about selecting the right solution for the project, not simply the most conventional one.

From storm damage to full restoration 🌧️➡️🏡

After Storm Ciaran hit in November 2023, Hartigan were appointed to assess the damage and manage the complete reinstatement of this property.

We oversaw every stage — from initial inspections and defect schedules to tendering, contract administration, and regular site visits — ensuring all repairs were accurately scoped, costed, and delivered to a high standard.
The result: a safe, fully restored building and a smooth, well‑coordinated process for our client.
