The National Energy Research Centre is one of the technical specialized Centres of the Royal Scientific Society. NERC specializes in research and development, training and projects in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency. NERC provides a range of specialized services in solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, geothermal, wind energy, bioenergy and energy efficiency. NERC provides turnk

ey project solutions in addition to specific consultancy assignments such as techno-economic feasibility studies, building energy design studies, energy audits, monitoring and verification as well as performance measurements for buildings and household appliances. NERC also operates specialized energy efficiency and renewable energy laboratories. The Centre is accredited according to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 by Lloyd’s, and our laboratories are accredited according to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 by the Jordanian Accreditation System (JAS). NERC aims to:
• Reduce the energy burden by improving methods, incentives and advisory services of efficient energy use to decrease total energy cost on the national level and to protect the environment.
• Educate Jordanian and regional engineers and technicians by holding training courses, seminars and workshops to enhance and develop local technical qualifications and experiences necessary for the use of new and renewable energies in addition to energy efficiency.
• Document needed energy information through establishing energy data bank to help in research studies and connect it to the national information database, and any other local and foreign institutions of similar goals to those of the Centre.
• Uphold the management and operation of laboratories, units and research and experimental stations to develop and use new and renewable energy sources and sell produced energy by these stations to the concerned parties.
• Collaborate with local, regional and international parties to enhance the abilities of the Centre in order to attain the desired goals.
• Effectively perform studies, research, and experimental projects in the field of using the local new renewable energy sources like oil shale, wind energy, solar energy bio-mass and geothermal to increase their contribution and satisfy the Kingdom's energy needs.

The Royal Scientific Society / NERC conducted the national closing event for SEACap 4 SDG SEACap 4 SDG ENI CBC Med Programme project in cooperation with Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) in the city of Aqaba in Jordan and Ecosol.

Participants discussed the outcomes and results of the project, and shared their ideas for future initiatives.

The closing event was part of a 3-days workshop that was attended by schools' staff who learned about energy efficiency practices ways to reduce energy consumption in schools, such as by installing LED lighting, improving insulation, and using energy-efficient appliances.

Also participants from ASEZA staff attended the workshop to learn about the benefits of green procurement and how to use the green procurement manual to purchase more sustainable goods and services.

The workshop was a success and helped to raise awareness of energy efficiency in Aqaba. It is hoped that the knowledge and skills gained by participants will help to improve energy efficiency in public buildings in the city.

The building sector is the largest energy consumer in the Mediterranean area. Most public buildings, especially the historic ones, are energy inefficient as the lack of interventions over time has led to increase the annual energy consumption and the CO2 emissions.
