Strategic Launch: Powering Northern Municipalities with Solar Energy
H.E. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, officially launched the solar PV project for 100+ Northern Region municipalities, marking a major step in Jordan's transition from energy dependency to economic opportunity. This initiative drives the Kingdom’s progress from its current 27% renewable energy contribution toward the national targets of 31% by 2030, 40% in the coming years, and up to 50% in future strategic scenarios.
The Director General of the Directorate General for European and International Affairs and Sustainable Finance Alessandro Guerri emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation to support renewable energy projects. He noted that this initiative represents a successful model of partnership between Jordan and its international partners in advancing sustainable finance. He also highlighted the continued commitment of international institutions to support Jordan’s energy transition goals through financial and technical assistance, helping accelerate the adoption of clean energy and improve resource efficiency. He added that such initiatives go beyond environmental impact, delivering tangible economic savings while contributing to sustainable local development.
The CEO of JREEEF Rasmi Hamzeh highlighted the project’s tangible impact, detailing an annual energy saving of 1,400 MWh and approximately 550,000 JOD in reduced electricity costs. The initiative will also slash CO2 emissions by 3,800+ tons every year, reinforcing the Kingdom’s commitment to environmental sustainability and allowing municipalities to reinvest savings into better community services.
