Last week, the president of West Canada Homes, Paul Nikel, attended a purification ceremony before construction began at one of our home sites in Hakuba. The breaking-ground ceremony, known as a "Jichinsai" in Japanese, is usually a Shinto ceremony aiming to pacify the Kami. The ceremony incorporates the use of a mound of soil, which is ceremonially dug into and from which embedded grass is cut. A tiered alter will incorporate various offerings of fish, vegetables and sake. These are usually shared out to participants at the end of the ceremony.

The ceremony was closely observed by a local group of local monkeys who seemed quite interested in the goings on of the larger, gangly counterparts occupied in the garden tent.
