Every summer, communities across Japan come together to celebrate Bon Odori (盆踊り), one of the country's most cherished seasonal traditions.

Bon Odori is held during the Obon season, a time when people remember and honor their ancestors. Today, these festivals are also an opportunity for families, friends, and neighbors to gather, enjoy delicious food, traditional dances, music, and fun activities for all ages.

One of these festivals takes place every year near Kawakin's original factory in Kawaguchi City, which was established nearly 78 years ago. Having grown alongside the local community for so many years, this event has become a special part of our summer.

Walking through the festival, visitors could enjoy classic Japanese summer favorites such as kakigori (shaved ice), yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried noodles with vegetables and savory sauce), and karaage (Japanese-style crispy fried chicken). There were also traditional festival games, including a fun challenge where players used a small hook attached to a paper string to catch floating balls by hooking the loop attached to them. Visitors could also try their luck in a lottery to win toys and local products such as rice and tofu.

Among the many colorful lanterns decorating the festival grounds, one proudly displayed the Kawakin name. As a local sponsor, we are honored to support this long-standing community tradition and help keep it alive for future generations.

For nearly 78 years, Kawakin has grown together with the Kawaguchi community. Supporting local events like this is one way we can give back and show our appreciation for the people and neighborhoods that have been part of our journey.

We are pleased to share that Rongzhi Zuo from Kawakin Core-Tech Co., Ltd. presented his research at the 10th International Symposium on Reliability Engineering and Risk Management (ISRERM 2026), held at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, from June 28 to July 1, 2026. ISRERM is a leading biennial international conference that brings together researchers and industry professionals to advance reliability engineering, risk management, and resilient infrastructure.
His paper, titled:
“Bridge Bearing Health Monitoring as Information Retrieval: A Consensus-Based Autoencoder Framework”introduces a new approach to improving bridge bearing health monitoring through data-driven technologies.
Bridge bearings are critical components that support the safety and performance of bridges by accommodating loads, movements, and seismic responses. However, accurately evaluating their condition over time remains challenging due to the influence of external factors such as temperature variations, traffic loads, and seismic activity.
This research applies an AI-based approach that learns normal bridge bearing behavior from historical monitoring data. By identifying representative patterns and detecting deviations from this baseline, the framework enables earlier and more reliable detection of potential anomalies.
This approach has the potential to support more efficient bridge maintenance by:

・Enabling earlier detection of deterioration
・Reducing unnecessary inspections and repair costs
・Minimizing traffic disruptions
・Improving the long-term safety and reliability of bridge infrastructure

IISEE International Training Course Participants Visited Kawakin Core-Tech Factory

On June 26, 2026, Kawakin Core-Tech welcomed participants of the IISEE (International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering) International Training Course for a factory visit.
The visit was organized as part of the JICA-supported international training program conducted by the Building Research Institute (BRI), Japan. The program brings together engineers and researchers specializing in earthquake engineering and structural engineering from around the world to enhance their technical knowledge and promote international collaboration in seismic disaster risk reduction.
A total of 20 participants joined the visit, including 14 international trainees from 12 countries and 6 representatives from the Building Research Institute. The international participants represented Albania, Algeria, Colombia, El Salvador, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and Uzbekistan.
During the factory tour, participants were introduced to Kawakin Core-Tech's seismic protection technologies, manufacturing processes, quality control system, and the role of seismic isolation and vibration control devices in improving the resilience of buildings and infrastructure against earthquakes.
The group also had the opportunity to observe the manufacturing process firsthand and exchange views with Kawakin engineers on the practical application of seismic technologies in different countries.
Kawakin Core-Tech highly appreciates the opportunity to contribute to international technical capacity building through programs such as the IISEE International Training Course. Bridge bearings are critical components that directly influence the safety, serviceability, and durability of bridge structures throughout their life cycle.

Among Japan’s traditional bridge bearing technologies, BP-A (high-strength brass spherical bearings) have been widely used in railway and highway bridges due to their compact geometry, high load capacity, and stable rotational behavior.

The BP-A bearing system is composed primarily of:

・Upper and lower steel bearing plates

・A spherical high-strength brass sliding plate

・Embedded solid lubricant within the sliding material

Its spherical geometry allows rotational movement, while the sliding interface accommodates displacement caused by thermal expansion, traffic loading, creep, shrinkage, and seismic actions.

Unlike elastomeric bearings that rely on rubber deformation, BP-A bearings utilize direct metallic sliding behavior. This structural concept provides excellent load resistance and long-term dimensional stability, particularly under heavy repeated loading conditions commonly found in railway infrastructure.

For bridge bearings, however, long-term performance is just as important as initial mechanical capacity. Over decades of service, repeated loading, accumulated sliding movement, environmental exposure, and seismic demands can gradually affect friction behavior and wear characteristics at the sliding interface.

Understanding how these properties evolve over time is therefore essential when evaluating the reliability and durability of bridge bearing systems throughout their service life.

Last December, Kawakin Core-Tech Co., Ltd. had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation of representatives from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to our manufacturing and testing facilities in Japan.

The visit was conducted as part of the Japan–Central Asia Forum held during the same week, aimed at promoting technical cooperation and knowledge exchange between Japan and Central Asia.

The delegation, which included representatives from KazNIISA (Kazakhstan Research and Design Institute for Construction and Architecture), as well as Mitsui Kazakhstan and Mitsui Uzbekistan, visited Kawakin to explore the potential application of Japanese earthquake-resistant technologies in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other Central Asian countries.

Welcomed by the Head of Factory, Mr. Shin Ishii, the delegation was introduced to Kawakin’s seismic isolation systems for buildings (including oil dampers, flat sliders, and rubber isolators) as well as bridge bearings and other structural protection solutions. During the visit, they toured the manufacturing and testing facilities and received technical explanations on product performance, design concepts, and practical applications from the Kawakin International Department team ThomasDrouin and Iksan Sanusi.

Kawakin remains committed to contributing its advanced engineering technologies to international markets and to strengthening collaboration with Central Asian partners to enhance structural safety and disaster resilience in the region.

Understanding how products move across the world is an important part of supporting global business. In early June, members of Kawakin's International Division visited the Port of Tokyo and several logistics-related facilities to deepen our understanding of international trade and transportation infrastructure.

A highlight of the visit was a tour aboard the Tokyo Minato Maru, which passes close to Tokyo's container terminals. From the vessel, we observed container ships, gantry cranes, and other key logistics infrastructure that support global trade. Since many of Kawakin's products are shipped overseas in containers, seeing these operations firsthand provided valuable insight into the logistics networks that connect our products to customers around the world.

The tour also highlighted the scale and complexity of Tokyo's logistics system, where maritime transport, aviation, and underground infrastructure work together to support one of the world's largest metropolitan economies. Seeing these interconnected systems in operation reinforced the importance of efficient logistics in today's global supply chains.

Following the port tour, we visited Tokyo Customs' Information Plaza, where we learned about customs operations, import regulations, and the important role customs authorities play in facilitating safe and efficient international trade. We then visited Tokyo Minatorie, an interactive exhibition facility operated by the Tokyo Port and Harbor Bureau, where we explored the history of Tokyo Bay and its contribution to the city's growth and development. From the observation floor, we enjoyed a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay and the surrounding waterfront area, providing a broader perspective on the infrastructure that supports the region.

One particularly memorable aspect of the visit was the opportunity to observe infrastructure projects that incorporate Kawakin products. From the water, we were able to view the pin-roller bearings installed on the Rainbow Bridge, while additional bridge bearings could be seen from the Yurikamome line at close range. Seeing our products supporting major transportation infrastructure offered a tangible reminder of the role our technologies play in connecting communities and enabling safe, reliable mobility.

The experience provided valuable insight into both international logistics and infrastructure development. By connecting what we see in our daily work with real-world transportation networks, we gained a deeper appreciation for the journey our products take—from manufacturing facilities to critical infrastructure projects around the world.

Kawakin was pleased to participate in the 5th International Bridge Seismic Workshop (5IBSW), held in Changsha, China. The event brought together researchers, engineers, and infrastructure professionals from around the world to discuss the latest developments in bridge engineering, seismic resilience, and infrastructure maintenance.

As part of the workshop, Kawakin's Rongzhi Zuo presented research exploring how artificial intelligence can support the inspection of modular bridge expansion joints.

Using a database of more than 12,500 real inspection images, the study investigates how AI can assist engineers in identifying potential defects and prioritizing inspection efforts. It also highlights the challenges of applying AI to real-world infrastructure data, where critical defects are often rare and historical records can be difficult to standardize.

While AI is not intended to replace engineering expertise, it has the potential to support more efficient and data-driven inspection processes, contributing to safer and more resilient infrastructure.

This work reflects Kawakin's ongoing commitment to innovation and to developing technologies that contribute to safer, smarter, and more resilient infrastructure.

Kawakin was proud to participate in the ASSISi international workshop, “𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻,” held on 22 May 2026 in Athens, Greece. The workshop brought together leading researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to discuss the latest developments in seismic isolation, energy dissipation, and seismic-resilient infrastructure.
As part of the technical program, Javier Lopez Gimenez from Kawakin’s International Department delivered a presentation entitled 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, introducing Japanese experience and practical applications of damper technology for seismic protection.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the workshop was the technical exchange with experts from different regions. During discussions following the presentation, several participants expressed particular interest in the relief valve mechanism used in Kawakin oil dampers, with some attendees encountering this technology for the first time. It was also encouraging to learn that many participants were unaware that Kawakin dampers had been installed in the project that received the ASSISi Grand Prize in 2025, highlighting the global reach of Japanese seismic protection technologies.
Another memorable moment came during presentations on seismic isolation detailing and best practices. Examples of isolated structures were presented to illustrate important design considerations such as floating stairs and seismic gaps, and it was a pleasant surprise to see photographs of Kawakin’s own seismically isolated headquarters used as a reference example.
The workshop also provided valuable insight into the application of seismic isolation in Greece. A particular highlight was the technical visit to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), one of the country's most prominent examples of seismically isolated construction. Combined with the technical presentations and discussions organized by the Hellenic Association for Earthquake Engineering (HAEE/ETAM), the visit offered participants a deeper understanding of how seismic isolation has been implemented in practice and the challenges associated with delivering high-performance earthquake-resilient structures.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to ASSISi and the organizing committee for hosting such a valuable technical forum and fostering international collaboration in earthquake engineering.
