🌊🌱 EM Mudball Day in Türkiye! 🇹🇷

Ahead of EM Mudball Day, our partner in Türkiye held a wonderful workshop at Akarca Beach in Seferihisar, Türkiye’s very first Cittaslow. 🌿

With great enthusiasm, children—the environmental heroes of tomorrow—prepared around 300 EM Mudballs for their upcoming mudball throwing activity, learning about environmental action while getting their hands dirty! 💚

And there was a lovely surprise… The children didn’t just make round mudballs! Among the rows of drying EM mudballs were starfish, fish, and even a little human figure floating on its back in the sea. ⭐🐟🌊

The flags of Türkiye, Japan, and the Netherlands proudly stood together at the workshop, symbolizing the meaningful connections being created across borders with our partners in Türkiye and the Netherlands, united by a shared commitment to a more sustainable future. 🇹🇷🇯🇵🇳🇱🤝

In this month's message, Prof. Higa introduces a case study from Portugal, where EM Technology has been successfully applied to improve sanitation at summer festivals by reducing foul odors and treating wastewater.💧

The article explains how the continuous use of EM Technology helps shift the surrounding environment from a putrefactive state to a fermentative and regenerative one. By maintaining a high population of beneficial microorganisms, EM Technology supports more effective wastewater management while contributing to a cleaner and more pleasant festival environment.🎪

Prof. Higa also reflects on the history of EM Technology in Europe, tracing its development back to the 1995 International Conference on Nature Farming and EM Technology in Paris, which marked the beginning of its expansion across the region.💪

🌍✨ Growing Together: EMRO's Annual Overseas Department Meeting 🌍✨

From July 6 to 8, EMRO held its annual Overseas Department Meeting at our headquarters in Okinawa, Japan.

Colleagues from our overseas offices gathered to share their recent activities, achievements, and updates from their respective countries. These meetings are a valuable opportunity for our headquarters team to better understand the work being carried out around the world, discuss local needs, and exchange ideas to further promote the development of EM Technology internationally.

During their visit, the Overseas Department team also toured the EM Universal Village in Kitanakagusuku. They learned about its circular resource system, where organic waste is collected and transformed into EM fertilizer, while methane gas generated during the process is used to produce electricity.✨

The EM Universal Village also includes greenhouses and demonstration fields used for research, field trials, and the promotion of sustainable organic farming.🌱

We are proud to celebrate the recognition of our partners, whose work has been featured in a recent publication by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The article, "The Use of Effective Microorganisms: An Innovation for the Regeneration of Degraded Soils in South America," introduces successful experiences in Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru, demonstrating how EM Technology is helping regenerate degraded soils, reduce reliance on agrochemicals, and promote more sustainable agricultural practices.

Regeneration of Degraded Soils Using EM Technology (Effective Microorganisms) in South America

Target Regions: Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru

South American tomato production faces significant challenges, including soil degradation, nematodes, root diseases, and the intensive use of agrochemicals. The FAO report highlights how EM Technology offers a sustainable solution by restoring soil health while improving productivity.

Key Results

🌱 Soil Regeneration

- EM microorganisms enhance the natural breakdown of agrochemical residues and other contaminants.
- Soil structure, aeration, water retention, and fertility were significantly improved.

🌿 Reduced Agrochemical Use

- Some farms completely eliminated nematicides and fungicides through EM application.
- Synthetic fertilizer use was reduced by 20–60%.

🍅 Higher Productivity

- Tomato yields increased by 20–50%.
- Up to 95% of harvested tomatoes reached commercial quality without chemical residues, supporting quality certification.

🤝 Empowering Farmers
- Farmers received practical training, participated in seminars, and shared experiences through demonstration farms.
- By producing their own Activated EM・1 and biofertilizers from locally available materials, they reduced production costs and became less dependent on commercial agrochemicals.

The Web Case Studies have been updated with a new success story from Brazil! 🇧🇷✨

Working together with our partner AMBIEM, BRASEM Biotechnology is using EM Technology to transform industrial and livestock waste into high-quality organic compost, helping address a major environmental challenge. 🌱♻️

Here are a few highlights from the case study:

✅ Faster processing: Reduced the composting cycle by approximately 30 days. ⏳

✅ Landfill diversion: More than 5,000 tons of industrial wastewater sludge are diverted from landfills each year and safely returned to the natural cycle. 🚜

✅ High-quality compost: The final compost reaches a near-neutral pH (approximately 7.14), optimal moisture levels, and eliminates the foul odors and pathogen risks commonly associated with traditional composting methods.

The biologically active compost is already supporting native seedling establishment and large-scale ecological restoration projects in São Paulo. 🌳🍃
