久住の至る所で見かける野花のひとつ「アザミ」は、スコットランドの国花。13世紀のヴァイキング侵略から国を救った「救国の花」として大切にされてきた花です。15世紀に正式に国花として制定され、スコットランド王家の副紋章にも使用されています。

日本で一般的なアザミでなく、長さ3～4センチの太い刺があるオニアザミの仲間です。
花言葉は「独立」「安心」。

The thistle, a wildflower commonly seen throughout Kuju, is the national flower of Scotland. It was officially designated as the national flower in the 15th century as the "flower of national salvation," having saved the country from Viking invasions in the 13th century. It is also used in the secondary coat of arms of the Scottish royal family.

Unlike the common thistle found in Japan, this is a type of thistle with thick thorns 3-4 centimeters long.

Its flower meanings are "independence" and "peace of mind."

「久住さやか」は、もともと地域資源を活用した食事の提供や特産品の販売を通じて、地域の活性化と観光客との交流を促進するために2001年にスタートした観光施設です。かつては大きなオルゴールを目玉にしたオルゴール館「ジョージホール」や地元野菜の販売所、地元の食材を使った食堂などで人気を博しました。

現在、行政からの要請を受けて発足した「久住さやか活用実行委員会」は、地元の有志が集まり、地域の活性化につながるようアイデアを出し合い、久住さやかを活用した様々な取り組みを行っています。

5月30日（土）には「マーケット＆コンサート」が開催されました。今回初めて開催された「フリーマーケット」には、野菜や手作りの小物、ストール、お菓子やパン、ハンバーガー、お弁当などが並び、買い求める人々で賑わいました。

ホールでは、午後からのコンサートに向けて午前中リハーサルが行われていました。時間の都合でコンサートには参加できませんでしたが、計6組のミュージシャンによる幅広いジャンルの生演奏を楽しみに、毎回訪れるファンも多いそうです。

こうした地元に密着したイベントに、久住蒸溜所として参加したり、協力できることは積極的に取り組んでいきたいと考えています。私たちにできることは限られているかもしれませんが、まずは地域のために何ができるのかを考え続けながら、一つひとつ形にしていきたいと思っています。

"Kuju Sayaka" is a tourist facility that opened in 2001 with the aim of revitalizing the local community and fostering interaction with urban residents by serving meals made with local ingredients and selling regional specialties.

The "Kuju Sayaka Utilization Executive Committee," established at the request of the local government, brings together local volunteers who share ideas to revitalize the region and carry out various initiatives utilizing Kuju Sayaka.

On Saturday, May 30, a “Market & Concert” was held. The “Flea Market,” held for the first time, featured vegetables, handmade accessories, scarves, sweets, bread, hamburgers, and boxed lunches, and was bustling with shoppers.

In the hall, rehearsals were taking place in the morning in preparation for the afternoon concert. Although I was unable to attend the concert due to time constraints, I hear there are many fans who visit every time, looking forward to live performances spanning a wide range of genres by a total of six musical acts.

As the Kuju Distillery, we are committed to actively participating in and supporting these community-focused events. While what we can do may be limited, we intend to continue thinking about what we can do for the region and bring those ideas to life, one by one.

「九州ウイスキージャーニー」
at ザ・リッツ・カールトン福岡

ザ・リッツ・カールトン福岡にて、九州最大のウイスキーイベント「WHISKY TALK FUKUOKA」の前夜にあたる6月13日（土）、九州を代表するジャパニーズウイスキー蒸溜所4社が集結し、今年で第2回目となる洗練されたテイスティング体験「九州ウイスキージャーニー」が18階「ザ・ロビーラウンジ＆バー」にて開催されます。

世界の五大ウイスキーの一つに数えられるジャパニーズウイスキー。とりわけ蒸溜酒文化が根づく九州は、日本屈指のウイスキー産地として、歴史と伝統を重んじながらも独自の個性を追求する蒸溜所を数多く輩出し、世界中の愛好家を魅了してきました。

イベントには、鹿児島県・嘉之助蒸溜所、大分県・久住蒸溜所、福岡県・新道蒸溜所、熊本県・山鹿蒸溜所の代表者を招き、それぞれが誇る個性豊かなウイスキーをご堪能できます。

ローカルバーレイの収穫が始まっています！

2月に麦を栽培いただいている農家さんグリーン法人中野さんと同じ農家さんの麦を使ってお酒造りに取り組む蔵元3社が共同で麦踏みをした圃場とその周辺の収穫作業が進んでいます。
収穫しているのは二条大麦！熟れるのが早く急いで収穫を始めたとのことで、今年の出来はとても良いそう！
作業の様子を見学させていただいたのですが、コンバインは結構早いスピードで、あっという間に麦が刈り取られていきます。収穫体験の時に社長が運転させていただきましたが、とてもこんなスピードでは運転できなかったため「プロがするとこんなに早いのか！」と驚きました！
予報では次の日の天気が崩れるので、急いで収穫作業を進めておられました。この日は夜7時まで収穫作業をした後、別の作業をされる予定だとか！
改めて、こうして支えてくださる方々のお陰でウイスキーが造れていることに感謝の念を禁じ得ません。

残すは六条大麦。こちらの収穫はもう少しだけ先になります。今から楽しみです。

The local barley harvest has begun!

Harvesting is underway in the fields and surrounding areas where three sake breweries, working with Green Corporation Nakano, the farmer who cultivates the wheat for us in February, jointly performed barley treading.

They are harvesting two-row barley! The harvest started quickly because it ripened fast, and apparently this year's crop is very good!

I was allowed to observe the work, and the combine harvester was moving at a surprisingly fast speed, cutting the barley in no time. When the president drove one during a harvest experience some time ago, it was nowhere near this speed. I was amazed at how fast professionals can do it!

The forecast predicted bad weather the next day, so they were rushing to finish the harvest. They were scheduled to work until 7 PM that night before moving on to other tasks!

Once again, I can't help but feel grateful to all the people who support us in making whisky.

All that remains is the six-row barley. The harvest of that will take a little longer. I'm looking forward to it.
