A special pencil case created using Universal #90/14 (HA×1 #90/14), based on a staff member’s elementary school-aged daughter’s idea of the “ideal pencil case.”

She wanted to keep her pens and ruler in separate compartments, and her idea was turned into a special handmade creation.

～～ Key details ～～

Piping tape was added along the edge of the flap.
When sewing the piping tape, the presser foot was changed from the standard one to a zipper foot.

Because the piping created a slight height difference, the standard presser foot was not stable enough. A slim zipper foot was used to make sewing easier and achieve a neat finish.

I’m working on my quilt called Dwelling Place that uses my line called Our Simple Life 😍 I’m doing a few techniques and I need to change my needle… so I am looking through my variety of to see which one will work best! I chose the anti glue needles !

I’m seeing through several layers of fusible and fabric… 😉

I tested the Jeans needle on some pretty thick upcycled denim, sewing through 6+ layers, and it went through cleanly with no skipped stitches. As someone who works with heavyweight denim regularly, that is so important in a needle.

【Needle Labo ~ Which needle is recommended for bonded quilted fabric? 】

“I’m sewing a heat-bonded quilted fabric with multiple layers, but which needle should I use...?”

Inspired by a question from one of our handmade-loving staff members, we tested three different needle series to see how they perform on heat-bonded quilted fabric!

【Needles Tried】
・Universal #90/14　　　　(A great all-purpose choice!)　
・Metal #90/14・ #100/16　 (With a larger eye!)
・Jeans #90/14・ #100/16　 (Recommended for thick fabrics!)

【Thread Used】
・100% polyester sewing thread (approx. TEX 30)

【Fabric Used】
・Heat-bonded quilted fabric (4 layers)

【Result】
In this test, the Jeans #100/16 produced the cleanest stitches! ✨

The sharp point helped minimize needle marks, and its suitable needle thickness prevented stitch misalignment at the bonded area, resulting in a clean finish.

We compared five different needles in total:
Universal #90/14, Metal #90/14・ #100/16, and Jeans #90/14・ #100/16.
The test was conducted using heat-bonded quilted fabric with four layers. 🧵

In 【Needles Tried】, both Universal #90/14 and Metal #90/14・ #100/16 showed slightly noticeable needle marks.

Also, we compared Jeans #90/14 and Jeans #100/16, which are recommended for heavy fabrics. The Jeans #90/14 showed less noticeable needle marks, but it may have been too thin for this fabric, resulting in stitch misalignment at the bonded area. On the other hand, Jeans #100/16 produced less noticeable needle marks and maintained clean stitches even at the bonded area.

This may be caused by a needle eye that is too small or by using a thread that is too thick for the needle.
If so, please try the Metal needle!

The large needle eye makes threading easier.
Recommended for sewing with thick threads, and coated metallic threads such as gold, silver, and lame.
It is also recommended as a reduce for upper thread breakage.

I had the opportunity to use an Organ Needles @ organneedle_official Top Stitch needle while quilting the cover quilt for Supercolossal, and I was really pleased with how it performed.
I paired it with 40 wt thread for both the walking-foot and free-motion quilting, and it stitched smoothly through the quilt sandwich, giving me clean, consistent stitches from start to finish.

When it came time to quilt Supercolossal, I knew I didn’t want to add more straight lines. The piecing already had plenty of bold geometry, so I wanted the quilting to bring something different to the design. I grabbed an air-soluble fabric pen, sketched the flowing curves directly onto the quilt, and quilted them on my domestic machine using Signature 40 Rainbow thread. I enjoy pairing bold, graphic piecing with softer, more graceful quilting. They may seem like opposites, but together they create a balance that always feels just right to me. It’s those little design decisions that make quilting so much fun. Every choice, from the fabric to the quilting, helps tell the story. 💛
