How Brain Connections Change Between Conscious and Unconscious States
*
Your brain is still active while you sleep—so why don’t we feel anything?
Even during sleep, the brain is not completely inactive. Neurons continue to fire and can still respond to sensory stimuli. Yet during deep sleep or anesthesia, we do not consciously experience these signals. Why?
In this study, we explored how brain activity and connections between neurons change between conscious and unconscious states. By observing the activity of thousands of neurons across multiple brain regions simultaneously in mice, we captured how the brain works as a network. During sleep or anesthesia, overall activity decreased, but neurons did not fall silent—they continued to show spontaneous activity.
It’s not just the level of activity that changes—it’s also how neurons connect. In the conscious state, the brain forms a broadly connected network, allowing information to spread widely across the brain. In contrast, during unconscious states, connections within groups of neurons become stronger, while communication between groups becomes weaker. As a result, the overall network becomes more separated. This may explain why the brain can respond to sensory signals without us consciously experiencing them.
We also found that these groups of neurons are not confined to specific locations but are distributed across distant brain regions. This suggests that consciousness depends on coordinated communication across the brain rather than activity in isolated areas. Our findings provide new insight into how the brain generates awareness and may help us better understand disorders such as coma, epilepsy, and dementia.
