笑竹堂 竹かご製造・販売、農村民泊

大分県由布市の里山で岡山と新潟出身の夫婦２人で青竹のかごを作っています。近所の閉校した小学校を工房にして、夫婦と子ども３人、猫６匹で暮らしています。

材料となる竹を自ら山で選び切り出し、暮らしの道具として使いやすく丈夫なかご作りを続けています。
竹かごは、プラスチック製品では味わえない豊かなぬくもりのある暮らしを演出してくれます。まずは1つ竹かごを使ってみませんか。

また、「竹細工職人の家で体験するスイッチひとつで始まらない暮らし」が体験できる農村民泊も行っています。
昔ながらの土間、かまど、薪風呂が残る築70年の古民家です。何をするにも時間はかかりますが、日々の忙しさを忘れて、ゆっくりと火のある暮らしを楽しんでいってください。

私たちは、竹かご中心とした先人の暮らしの知恵と技術を継承していきたいと考えています。

このたび、地元大津留地区の伝統工芸士、佐藤千明さん（1931-2009）の買い物かごの縁を修理しました。千明さんには、竹の訓練校の入校前に一度だけ工房でお会いしたことがあります。

まず、取っ手の籐かがりを外して取っ手を本体から引き抜きます。そして竹の縁巻きをすべて外します。
縁巻きを外したので、職人仲間と普段見られない縁の構造を観察し、理解を深めました。

縁巻きと籐かがりをやり直し、何とか本来の形になりました。千明さんから「まだまだやな。」と言われた気がしました。

竹と椿のお宿 花べっぷ .beppu 様が3月6日にリニューアルオープン！今回は、私以外の５人の竹職人の皆さんの作品をご紹介します。

さんは、船や雲をモチーフにしたランプシェード。温かみのある光が空間を包み込みます。
さんは、花べっぷ様のロゴ（横80㎝）をかたどったフォトプロップス。赤く染めた竹ひごで椿が鮮やかに表現されています。
さんは、紙を貼ったドームと竹の衝立。シンプルな美しさの中に凛とした存在感があります。
さんは、四季の雲。季節ごとの雲の表情を竹で見事に表現されています。
さんは、チェックイン後にお客さま自らがアメニティ・飲み物・お菓子を入れる手提げかご。実用と美しさが見事に調和した一品です。

花べっぷ様は、まさに竹づくしのお宿。今回のリニューアルだけでなく、前回も１階の竹パーティション、２階の竹アーチ、白石白雲斎氏と森上仁氏の作品が置かれました。「泊まれる美術館」と言っても過言ではありません。
いつか館内ガイドと竹細工体験を組み合わせたツアーができたら…そんな夢を密かに描いています。

Hana Beppu (.beppu), a beautiful ryokan in Beppu, Japan, reopened after renovations on March 6th! In this post, I'd like to introduce the wonderful works created by the five other bamboo craftspeople who contributed to this renewal.

crafted stunning lamp shades inspired by boats and clouds, casting a warm and gentle light throughout the space.
created a large photo props piece (80cm wide) in the shape of the Hana Beppu logo — a camellia rendered beautifully in red-dyed bamboo strips.
contributed a paper-covered bamboo dome and a bamboo partition screen, pieces that carry a quiet, refined presence.
expressed the clouds of all four seasons in bamboo — each piece capturing the unique character of nature's ever-changing skies.
wove a practical yet beautiful hand-carry basket, used to deliver amenities, drinks, and sweets to guests upon check-in. A perfect blend of craft and function.

Hana Beppu is truly a ryokan devoted to bamboo. Even in its previous renovation, bamboo partitions, arches, and works by renowned artists adorned the space. It is no exaggeration to call it a "museum you can stay in."
Someday, I hope to organize a guided tour of the space followed by a hands-on bamboo craft workshop — just a dream for now, but one I'm quietly nurturing.

竹と椿のお宿 花べっぷ .beppu 様が3月6日にリニューアルオープン！このたび、そのお手伝いをさせていただきました。

実は私、2012年にJR九州の宿べっぷ荘様から花べっぷ様へリニューアルされる際にも、新米職人ながら先輩職人さんとともに１階ロビーの竹パーティションや２階の竹アーチ製作に携わりました。今回は、14年前の記憶を胸に感慨深く作業を進めました。

今回の製作物は、縦長の「花テント」（直径1.7m×高さ1.9m）、タコのような入口の「花子テント」（直径2.0m×高さ1.5m）、そして入口壁の花べっぷ様のロゴ（横40㎝）の3点。いずれも２階のオールインクルーシブラウンジに設置されています。

依頼のテーマは「大人も子どもも中に入って楽しく過ごせる竹のテント」。
近年、アーティストによるすばらしい竹のオブジェを目にする機会が増えましたが、私は竹かご職人。だからこそ、今回の作品は竹かごの延長線上にある「竹かご職人にしか作れないもの」という想いを、自分への絶対条件としました。

作業はマダケ約40本の伐採からスタート。長さ5m約400本のひごに加工し、丁寧に編み上げました。お客さまが直接触れることを考慮し、竹ひごは表裏両面の角を落とす「面取り」を施しています。完成まで、約1か月半。

花べっぷ様のロゴは椿をモチーフにした赤。そのため竹ひごの染色が必要でしたが、職業訓練校を修了して以来の染色作業だったため、 さんに染色と編みのご指導をいただきました。
テントの構造については さん、総合プロデュースは さんにお力添えいただきました。
3名の先輩方は今回のリニューアルでご自身の作品も納品されており、遅れ気味だった私のテントの編み作業もご支援いただきました。

普段は道具としての竹かごを作っている私にとって、このような大型製作物は不慣れで不安も大きかったですが、諸先輩の助言とお手伝いのおかげで、無事に完成することができました。心より感謝申し上げます。

また、妻はテントと壁掛け合わせて3点のロゴを製作してくれました。子どもたちは竹の伐採と洗浄を担ってくれました。製作期間中、ずっと家庭をないがしろにしていたにもかかわらず、支えてくれた家族に、本当に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

竹かごの中から外を眺めることは物理的に難しいですが、このテントでは可能。実際に中に入ると、まるで宇宙を見ているような感覚に包まれます。

これらの作品は宿泊のお客さまのみが利用できるオールインクルーシブラウンジに設置されています。見学をご希望の方は、私にご連絡ください。

Hana Beppu (.beppu), a beautiful ryokan in Beppu, Japan, reopened after renovations on March 6th — and I had the honor of contributing to this special project.

This time, I created three pieces for the all-inclusive lounge on the 2nd floor: the **"Hana Tent"** (diameter 1.7m × height 1.9m), the **"Hanako Tent"** with its unique octopus-like entrance (diameter 2.0m × height 1.5m), and the **Hana Beppu logo** woven from red-dyed bamboo strips.

As a bamboo basket weaver by trade, I was determined to create something only a basket craftsman could make. Starting from harvesting around 40 Madake bamboo stalks, I processed them into approximately 400 strips, each carefully chamfered for a smooth finish. The project took about one and a half months to complete.

Kyushu is well known in Japan for its bamboo basketry. Madake bamboo grows in abundance throughout the island and their is a long history of traditional bamboo basket making using the green madake bamboo. The bamboo is harvested in the fall and stored through the following summer.

I spent three days with learning about bamboo basketry, from harvest to processing to weaving. He took me to the bamboo forest that is communally managed and harvested from by the group of bamboo basket makers that he shares a workshop space with in an old school building in Shonai. We looked at bamboo canes of various ages and he showed me how to pick out the ideal canes for different types of weaving. The biggest variable is how soft and flexible the bamboo is, with younger shoots being more soft and pliable. The softer bamboo is mainly used for lashing such as the fuchimaki rim wrapping.

Using bamboo knives, we split the bamboo to the desired width and thickness, then used width adjusting and thickness adjust jigs to take the pieces to the final dimension. He taught me how to weave a diagonally plaited basket and I learned some new techniques and tips for weaving with bamboo. We had some leftover material and time so he helped me make a hexagonal weave, triangle shaped onigiri bento box with a tight fitting lid. We used heat to bend the thick bamboo rim to the shape we needed.

After getting the hang of splitting the bamboo, I could see it is faster and easier to process than split wood for baskets. Because the bamboo doesn’t have grain like wood, the fibers are all very organized and uniform. This allows for fast splitting and for the use of handy jigs like the thickness adjusting jig that consists of two knives tapped into a piece of wood to set the width after pulling the pieces through the knives.

I had a great time staying at Mihara-san’s guesthouse and going to various onsens in the evenings around the area. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend staying with them and you can do a bamboo weaving lesson regardless of your experience level!
