Visual documentation has become one of Fablab Winam’s key requirements through photography.

At FABLAB WINAM KE, we know how easy it is to finish a build and completely forget to hit "record". But we’ve made a conscious effort to change that. Capturing the raw process, the sketches, the failed prototypes, the sparks, and the final builds to give our work a voice and to preserve our history. Sometimes we still forget to take the shot but we are still being consistent and having it in mind.

Our photos are proof of our progress. They turn a local hardware solution in Kisumu into an open-source inspiration for the world.

On this World Photography Day, we are celebrating the Art That Tells Our Story.

To us, photography has always been more than just taking pictures, it is the bridge between our workbench and the world.

Through the lens, we have captured moments of discovery, failure, iteration, and triumph. Photography has allowed us to share our journey, build a vibrant Fablab fraternity across borders, and bring our community right into the heart of what we do in Kisumu. It enables us to tell the maker story within and beyond our walls.

This World Photography Day, under our theme "Through the Maker’s Lens," we celebrate the power of visual storytelling in driving innovation and human connection.

Special Spotlight:
A massive appreciation goes to our photographer Irene Olwande, whose exceptional eye and dedication behind the camera has continuously captured the soul of Fablab Winam. Irene doesn't just photograph machines or raw materials; she captures the passion of young innovators, the focus of local artisans, and the true spirit of the maker movement in Western Kenya. Thank you for framing our story so beautifully!

As we celebrate the beauty of the photographic process today, we reflect on how every snapshot in our lab becomes a piece of our history and a beacon for future innovators.

Mary Nyamanya becomes the first Kenyan to graduate from Fabricademy, a premier global program run by the Fab Foundation at MIT (USA) covering the intersection of biology, bio-materials, digital fabrication, and textile technology!

Fablab Winam is beyond proud to celebrate our very own Program Lead on her official graduation from the Fabricademy 2026.

Mary’s journey through Fabricademy has been an inspiring dive into sustainable design and advanced fabrication. Through experimentation, documentation, and creative problem-solving, Mary says the journey challenged her to explore, think differently, and create boldly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in circular manufacturing.

💭 In Mary’s Words:
"I've learned that innovation isn't just about making things, it's about asking meaningful questions, embracing failure as part of the process, and improving through experimentation and meaningful mentorship."

This historic milestone was made possible through an incredible support system:
Global Mentorship: A huge thank you to instructor Rico Kanthatham and mentor Anastacia Pistofidou for their unwavering guidance, patience, and expertise throughout the program.

Collaboration: Mary’s training was supported through the joint Toyota Motors Corporation, Japan and Fablab Winams Fablabable Kinetic seat project. This investment directly empowers local talent to drive sustainable innovation in Kenya.

The conference was a melting pot of innovation, and Our Director, Martin Oloo was right in the middle of it all, strengthening our ties with the global FabLab network. Attending this global conference was particularly significant as He joined fellow innovators to discuss the future of digital fabrication.

The connection between local grassroots innovation in Kisumu and global pioneering tech.

The deep dive listening to leadership session in the MIT Kresge Auditorium, where The Fab Foundation President Sherry Lassiter was leading a panel discussion gave insights into scaling impact through the network are invaluable.

Martin attended a discussion on the program led by the founder of the FabLab movement Professor Neil Gershenfeld, Director of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms. Understanding the roots of this movement helps refine our path forward.

Together with the Global team, Martin conducted a kids workshops. The online workshop conducted on Monday, 27/July/2026 saw over 800 kids attending from different parts of the world.

With the Toyota Motor Corporation Japan Kohshi Katoh, We presented the progress of the Fablabable kinetic seat, followed by a small discussion group on the same, and today we will be holding the workshop about the same. See schedules. This session will be moderated by Rico Kanthatham

Martin also joined other African Fablabs in pitching for Fab28 to be hosted in Rwanda.

Are you a passionate student or recent graduate looking to gain hands-on experience in the fast-growing world of digital fabrication and social impact?

In partnership with Learning Connected , we are thrilled to announce 2 internship opportunities at Fablab Winam in Kisumu, Kenya!

We are looking for self-motivated, creative individuals to fill the following roles:

What You Need to Know
📍 Location: Kisumu, Kenya (FabLab Winam)
🎓 Who Can Apply: Open to Kenyan nationals who are current students or graduates from the last three years.
💻 Preparation: Includes an online preparatory training from 10th – 28th August 2026 (7 hours total).

Our second cohort of attachees for 2026 has been sharing something with us that we can't miss to tell you about. They tell us that their interactions with the tools at Fablab Winam excites them the most. Highlighting that they have interacted with tools and technologies they never had the privilege of interacting with.

That excitement keeps pulling them into the lab, It keeps their hands busy and their minds curious. They have realized these tools don't just feel cool, they make their workflow faster, smoother, and smarter.

But here's what we have learned:

Seeing their awe reminds us that we work from a place of privilege. The tools that feel "normal" to us are mind-blowing to someone else. And that should never make us proud but humble to know that we have a duty to pass down knowledge. Not just on how to switch a tool on, but how to manage it, care for it, and use it responsibly. To capacity-build every trainee who walks through our doors, so they leave not just having used a tool – but truly understood it.

Fablab Winam has been selected as Master Craft Service providers for NYOTA beneficiaries. This selection affirms the impact we have in the youths in Kisumu County in enhancing skills.

Courtesy of the selection, we were delighted to host representatives from the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) at our offices for a courtesy call and site visit.

The delegation came to affirm our capacity, see our facility firsthand, and understand how we bridge the gap between classroom learning and market-ready skills. They observed our digital fabrication tools, robotics and STEM education programs, and ongoing prototyping projects. We walked them through our training approach – which emphasizes people-centered design, local manufacturing, and real-world problem-solving.

Fablab Winam in this collaboration will seek to develop the beneficiaries critical technical and soft skills in their various areas of apprenticeship.

The NYOTA project is designed to increase employment, enhance earnings, and promote savings for vulnerable youths nationwide. It targets youths aged 18–29 (up to 35 for persons with disabilities), with a primary focus on those with limited formal education.

As Master craftsmen we will also get certification and from compensated the government. We are delighted to be recognized as a trusted Master Craft partner, enabling us to shape a generation of skilled, confident, and job-ready young Kenyans.

Attachment is a transformative bridge between classroom theory and the reality of work.

We are currently hosting our second cohort of attachees for 2026. 6 trainees from:
The Kisumu National Polytechnic
Mumias West Technical and Vocational College
Koitalel Samoei University

Attached across four diverse areas:

⚙️ Mechatronics Engineering
📌 Project Planning and Management
💻 Information Communication Technology (ICT)
📊 Task Management and Progress Reporting

Through hands-on involvement in live projects and daily lab activities the trainees get to experience the full lifecycle of an idea – from concept to prototype to testing and refinement. They equally get to collaborate despite their diverse fields and get to experience the emergence of new approaches, enhancing their understanding and perspective of how different roles come together to make innovation possible in the lab and beyond - every task shapes the bigger picture. They get to build resilience, practical judgment, and the kind of confidence that only comes from solving real problems in real time.

At Fablab Winam , we are always delighted to have trainees among us. They don’t just help bring projects to conclusion; they bring fresh energy, questions, and perspectives that challenge us too. More importantly, we get to walk with them in their professional exploration journey, equipping them not only with technical skills but also with essential soft skills: communications, documentation, Financial and Tax Awareness, reporting, teamwork, and problem-solving.

At Fablab Winam, impact is measured by the confidence a young professional carries into their next chapter.
