Day 1 of the STEM Summer Camp: LEGO Edition in Mombasa is officially in the books.

Today, our young campers aged 7–14 got to explore some of the basics behind the technology we use every day. They learned about circuits and the different components that make them work, including connectors, LEDs, wires and the Arduino Uno.

We also looked at electricity and how it is transferred through a circuit.

Then we put the lessons into practice.

Working in the lab, the campers used LEGO bricks and Arduino kits to build working streetlights. There was plenty of building, testing and figuring things out along the way, and the best part was seeing the lights actually come on.

That's Day 1 done, with two more days of building and coding to go.

We're looking forward to seeing what the campers come up with next at IOMe001 Social Innovation Center in Kizingo.

We were pleased to welcome the Secretary General of the Red Cross Society of Niger, Mr. Alhassane Aboubakar Youssoufa, and his Assistant, Dr Mahaman Bashir Djalilatou, to IOMe001 Social Innovation Center in Mombasa today.

During their visit, we took them around the centre and shared more about the work happening within the lab, from youth engagement and fabrication to innovation and livelihoods support.

IOMe001 is 1 of the only 2 Red Cross-affiliated fabrication and innovation labs in East Africa (the other being IOMe005). The centre brings together the idea of a youth house and an innovation lab, creating a space where young people can learn, create and explore new ways of addressing challenges within their communities.

For us, this is where innovation has real meaning. It is not only about what can be built in the lab, but also about how those skills and opportunities can contribute to livelihoods and efforts to alleviate human suffering.

We are grateful for the visit and the opportunity to share the IOMe001 story.

One conversation during the WSEI Pre-Accelerator Program has stayed with us.
A participant said she no longer looks at her business the same way she did a few weeks ago.

That sums up this cohort better than any statistic could.
This week, we celebrated 30 women who completed the WSEI Pre-Accelerator Programme.

The graduation marked the end of the programme, but it also reflected weeks of practical learning, honest conversations, business pitches, exhibitions and new relationships that will continue long after the certificates have been handed out.

None of that happened because of one organisation.

WSEI led the programme, Ziya Bridge Limited expanded access to financing, Unearth Potential strengthened business capacity through coaching, and IOMe254 provided the innovation space where ideas could be explored and developed.

To our graduates, congratulations.

Thank you for trusting the process, encouraging one another and showing up every day ready to learn.

And to every partner who invested their time and expertise, thank you for believing in what these women can achieve.

There was a lot to take away from yesterday’s CCTV Installation & Maintenance Training by TechKidz Africa & IOMe254.

The morning started with the basics, exploring the different types of CCTV cameras, including Dome, IP and PTZ systems, and how each is used.

Participants also learned about the origins of CCTV technology and why it was first developed before moving into the practical side of installation and maintenance.

For many, the highlight was getting hands-on with the equipment. Learning by doing always leaves a lasting impression, and today's session gave participants the chance to put theory into practice.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from Swahili Pot Hub together with the Mombasa County Department of Youth, Gender, Sports and Social Services. Thank you for taking the time to visit and engage with our participants.

To everyone who attended, thank you for choosing to spend your morning learning with us. We hope to see you again at future trainings.

Through exciting LEGO-based activities, participants will explore STEM concepts while building confidence, working in teams and developing practical skills that extend beyond the classroom.

A visit is often the beginning of something much bigger.

We were pleased to welcome the Center for Global Equality, Cambridge and Taita Taveta University for a visit to our social innovation centre.

The facility tour explored the work taking place across KRCS, CGE and TTU, and learned more about how we support young innovators through digital fabrication, entrepreneurship, and practical skills development.
The visit also gave us an opportunity to discuss new areas of shared vision.

These conversations are an important step towards building partnerships that strengthen research, innovation, and opportunities for young people.

This afternoon looked a little different at IOMe001.
For a few hours, laptops were replaced with paint palettes, conversations happened over canvases, and people who had never met before found themselves sharing ideas, colours and plenty of laughter.
That was the spirit of Sip & Paint.
Whether someone arrived with painting experience or was picking up a brush for the first time, everyone left with something they had created themselves.
More importantly, many left having met someone new.
Events like these remind us that creativity has a way of bringing people together. It gives us space to pause, unwind after a busy week and connect with others in a setting that's relaxed and welcoming.

A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon what it was.

We've already heard one question several times since the event ended: "When is the next one?"

This week, we officially kicked off our LEGO School Program in three schools: Kwa Shee, Mtongee, and Kongowea! 🎉

Our facilitators guided students through hands-on agriculture and water filtration projects, bringing classroom concepts to life in a fun, practical, and engaging way.
By combining the science they learn in school with Internet of Things (IoT) concepts, we introduced students to the exciting world of automation and smart technologies, sparking their curiosity and encouraging them to think like future innovators.
