A milestone was reached yesterday as our Digital Literacy students in Lamu sat for their final Computer Packages examinations.

Lot 20 has worked hard to build practical digital skills, from creating and formatting professional documents in Microsoft Word to organizing and managing data using Microsoft Access. Yesterday's exam provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate the knowledge and confidence they have developed throughout their learning journey.

At IOMe254, we believe that digital skills open doors to education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Seeing our students reach this stage is a reminder of the impact that access to learning opportunities can have on individuals and communities.

Congratulations to every student who completed the exam today. We are proud of your dedication and look forward to seeing what you achieve next.

Big step forward for our I.O.Me254 innovators in Lamu today.

After working through physical low-fidelity prototypes, our learners have moved on to designing live on SolidWorks, the same professional-grade software used by engineers and product designers around the world.

This shift matters. It takes learners from rough, hands-on models to precise digital designs, the kind that can be tested, refined, and eventually manufactured. It is the bridge between an idea sketched on paper and a product that could actually exist in the market.

For these innovators, this is a real introduction to the tools and processes used in professional design and engineering work, and a launchpad for whatever they choose to build next.

We are proud to host conseiller institutionnel Georges Serre, together with the Vice President in Charge of Ports and Cargo Terminals at CMA CGM, during their visit to Mombasa.

The CMA CGM Foundation has been a valued partner for years, collaborating with us on various humanitarian initiatives and, most notably, supporting the establishment of the IOMe001 Social Innovation Center.

We are excited about our growing partnership and look forward to this year's activities to strengthen services to Mombasa’s growing community of innovators, makers, and social entrepreneurs.

The Introduction to SolidWorks cohort at I.O.Me254 in Lamu had their first session today, and if you were expecting screens and software, you would have been surprised.

The session opened with pencils and paper. Learners sketched out designs by hand, working through shapes, dimensions, and how objects relate to each other in space before any software was introduced. It is an approach that might seem unexpected for a digital design course, but the logic behind it is solid.

Understanding what you are building before you sit down at a computer changes how you work. The decisions you make in the software become more deliberate. The designs come out cleaner. And the learner who walked in on day one walks out with a foundation that goes beyond knowing which buttons to click.

Today, Lot 20 of our Digital Literacy Program took an exciting step into the world of digital fabrication.

Lab members were introduced to the Modela machine and learned how digital designs can be translated into physical objects through milling and cutting processes. The session helped bridge the gap between digital creativity and real-world production, giving participants firsthand exposure to technologies used in prototyping, manufacturing, and product development.

Experiences like these are important because they help young people see that innovation is something they can actively participate in and shape.

At IOMe254, we believe every young person deserves access to the tools, knowledge, and opportunities that will define the future of work and innovation.

World Environment Day provided an opportunity for our volunteers and interns to learn, reflect, and innovate around some of today’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The day began with interactive discussions on the cyclical nature of the environment, exploring how ecosystems naturally restore balance through interconnected processes. Participants also examined the impact of plastic pollution and the importance of adopting more sustainable practices.

We then hosted an in-house “Nature-Inspired” Mini-Hackathon, challenging teams to design technology-driven solutions using biomimicry or artificial intelligence to address waste pollution in Mombasa. The session concluded with exciting 3-minute shark-tank style pitches, where participants presented their ideas and received feedback from their peers.

The creativity, critical thinking, and passion demonstrated throughout the day reinforced the importance of empowering young people to become active contributors to environmental solutions.

What innovative idea do you think could help reduce waste pollution in Mombasa? Join the conversation below.
