Eurocode 7 (BS EN 1997) does not specify a fixed number of boreholes for a given size of land during a geotechnical investigation. Instead, the extent of the investigation should be guided by the nature and complexity of the proposed development, the ground conditions, and the design information required by the Engineer.

While there is no universal rule, a minimum of four boreholes per acre can often provide adequate subsurface information for many projects. However, larger, more sensitive, or heavily loaded structures may require a more detailed investigation program.

A comprehensive geotechnical investigation should not rely on boreholes alone. Trial pits, Standard Pe*******on Tests (SPT), groundwater observations, and relevant laboratory tests are equally important in establishing reliable design parameters.

The cost of a proper site investigation is small compared to the cost of foundation failure, underpinning, redesign, or structural rehabilitation. Investing in quality geotechnical data at the beginning of a project is one of the most effective ways of ensuring safe, economical, and durable construction.
