The Swedish Princess Victoria meets the Kenya 2022 winners!

During the 2022 SJWP Global Award Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP), posed with the winners from Kenya, Valerie Waweru and Olive Ayuma.

Students between the ages of 15 and 20 compete in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize each year to showcase their solutions to water-related problems. More than 35 nations competed in 2022. For SJWP in Kenya, Alison and Davis Group (ADG) is the national organizer. Entry submission for 2023 is currently open.

YOUTH IN WATER COMPETITION ANNOUNCES TOP 10 INNOVATIONS COUNTRYWIDE

NAIROBI, KENYA - APRIL 19 2022

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) Competition has released the Top 10 Most Innovative Water Solutions Projects in Kenya.
The 10 projects were shortlisted from 30 entries selected from nine geographic regions of Kenya represented by Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), TanaWWDA, TanathiWWDA, CRWWDA, NRWWDA, LVNWWDA, LVSWWDA, CWWDA, and NWWDA.
SJWP is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who develop projects that can solve major challenges facing water consumers in their countries. The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the global organizer of SJWP partnered with Alison & Davis Group (ADG), a Kenyan event organizing company in 2021 to bring the competition into the country. AWWDA and Xylem are the 2022 sponsors of SJWP Kenya.
The Kenyan finalist is expected to be unveiled on April 29, 2022, for the top innovation to proceed to the global level. The international competition attracts thousands of entries from different corners of the globe. In August 2022, Kenya will for the first time join over 40 other countries for the global prize-award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
The winning innovator(s) from Kenya will join other international competition participants to compete for the top prize of KES1.6 Million ($15,000), a blue crystal prize sculpture, and a handmade diploma in Sweden during the World Water Week Celebrations.
Speaking during the Top 10 projects unveiling ceremony, Ms. Florence Wanjiru, the Board Chairperson, ADG said: “Kenyan youths are pioneering the East African region by innovating to secure the country’s water resources. We are looking forward to working with parents and teachers to ensure the innovations are further improved so that we can bring the top prize to Kenya in August,” she said.
In 2021, the top prize globally was won by Eshani Jha from the USA for her research on how to remove contaminants from water. “Our finalists could be tomorrow’s leading scientists and we know from experience that their innovations can solve real-world problems. Many projects that started as part of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize are now being used, helping thousands of people in different parts of the world,” says Ania Andersch, Senior Manager Stockholm Junior Water Prize at SIWI. Her Royal Highness (HRH), Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the Patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.

STOCKHOLM INTERNATIONAL WATER INSTITUTE (SIWI) PARTNERS WITH KENYAN COMPANY TO BRING YOUTH WATER COMPETITION TO KENYA

Nairobi, August 10, 2021
Kenya is set to host the 1st Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWPKenya) competition this year after the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the global organizer of SJWP partnered with Alison & Davis Group (ADG), a Kenyan event organizing company to bring the competition into the country.

Previously, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Benin and Nigeria were the only African countries participating in the global youth competition.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who develop projects that can solve major challenges facing water consumers in their countries. The global competition attracts thousands of entries from 38 countries from various parts of the world. The prize-award ceremony is held every year in Stockholm, Sweden since 1997.

The winning innovator(s) from Kenya will join other competition participants from 38 countries to compete for the top prize of KES1.6 Million ($15,000), a blue crystal prize sculpture and a handmade diploma in Sweden, August next year during the World Water Week.

Speaking during the project unveiling ceremony, Ms Florence Wanjiru, the Board Chairperson, ADG said: “In hosting the Stockholm Junior Water Prize this year, Kenya is pioneering the region by working towards securing the country’s water resources by investing in its innovative youth population. We are looking forward to getting highly competitive innovations so that we can bring the top prize to the country next year,” she said.

In 2020, the top prize globally was won by Hiroki Matsuhashi and Takuma Miyaki from Japan for a method to control soil runoff and increase food production, using the traditional Japanese soil solidification technology Tataki. “Our finalists could be tomorrow’s leading scientists and we know from experience that their innovations can solve real-world problems. Many projects that started as part of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize are now being used, helping thousands of people in different parts of the world,” says Ania Andersch, Senior Manager Stockholm Junior Water Prize at SIWI.

The project unveiling ceremony was held online on August 10, 2021 in line with the Ministry of Health, Kenya and World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 guidelines. Her Royal Highness (HRH) Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the Patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
