YOUTH IN WATER COMPETITION ANNOUNCES TOP 10 INNOVATIONS COUNTRYWIDE
NAIROBI, KENYA - APRIL 19 2022
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) Competition has released the Top 10 Most Innovative Water Solutions Projects in Kenya.
The 10 projects were shortlisted from 30 entries selected from nine geographic regions of Kenya represented by Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), TanaWWDA, TanathiWWDA, CRWWDA, NRWWDA, LVNWWDA, LVSWWDA, CWWDA, and NWWDA.
SJWP is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who develop projects that can solve major challenges facing water consumers in their countries. The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the global organizer of SJWP partnered with Alison & Davis Group (ADG), a Kenyan event organizing company in 2021 to bring the competition into the country. AWWDA and Xylem are the 2022 sponsors of SJWP Kenya.
The Kenyan finalist is expected to be unveiled on April 29, 2022, for the top innovation to proceed to the global level. The international competition attracts thousands of entries from different corners of the globe. In August 2022, Kenya will for the first time join over 40 other countries for the global prize-award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
The winning innovator(s) from Kenya will join other international competition participants to compete for the top prize of KES1.6 Million ($15,000), a blue crystal prize sculpture, and a handmade diploma in Sweden during the World Water Week Celebrations.
Speaking during the Top 10 projects unveiling ceremony, Ms. Florence Wanjiru, the Board Chairperson, ADG said: “Kenyan youths are pioneering the East African region by innovating to secure the country’s water resources. We are looking forward to working with parents and teachers to ensure the innovations are further improved so that we can bring the top prize to Kenya in August,” she said.
In 2021, the top prize globally was won by Eshani Jha from the USA for her research on how to remove contaminants from water. “Our finalists could be tomorrow’s leading scientists and we know from experience that their innovations can solve real-world problems. Many projects that started as part of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize are now being used, helping thousands of people in different parts of the world,” says Ania Andersch, Senior Manager Stockholm Junior Water Prize at SIWI. Her Royal Highness (HRH), Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the Patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
