From Crop to Industry: Unlocking Cassava’s Potential on Kenya’s Coast 🌱
Cassava is emerging as one of the Coast’s most promising crops — not just for food, but also for industry.Giraffe Bioenergy recently participated in the Pwani Agriculture Revitalization Summit, convened by Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani, where leaders and stakeholders explored how the region can turn agricultural potential into real economic opportunity.
Discussions with Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Kilifi County Deputy Governor H.E. Florah Mbetsa Chibule, and other partners focused on building strong agricultural value chains that benefit farmers, counties and industry.
At the summit, Giraffe Bioenergy shared its perspective on cassava as both a food and fuel crop. Too often, conversations frame agriculture as a choice between food or fuel. In reality, crops like cassava show that with the right value chains, it can be both.
Through our cassava-to-ethanol initiative in Kilifi County, we are developing infrastructure that connects farmers to regulated energy and manufacturing markets. This creates reliable demand for cassava, supports better farm planning and strengthens local value addition along the Coast.
We look forward to continuing to work with farmers, counties and partners to unlock cassava’s full potential in Kenya.
