The second innovation is ;
2. Hollow pre-cast Blocks
The term precast refers to the fact that the blocks are prepared and hardened under controlled conditions before they are brought to the specified site. It's basically a mixture of Portland cement , sand ,gravel and water. This produces light concrete material which vary in units ranging from 100mm to 600 mm of length and from 50mm to 300 in width.
Usually used in wall masonry and as roofing blocks. These blocks incorporate at least 40% of air cavity in gross volume and masonry can be strengthened with steel reinforcement ( typically corners,openings ) which makes them well-suited for load bearing construction.
As an Engineer and as a construction expert the major advantage of these hollow blocks is that it can be used as a slab in construction of larger spans without introduction of beams and columns.
Today, the process of making these Hollow blocks have been highly automated that can mould and produce many various and complex shapes at a short period of time. Automation has also helped the manufacturer to make customized blocks as per clients preference with ease.
Due to its light in weight as compared to conventional buildings stones it is commonly used since it makes the structured light and help reduce the dead load of the overall structure.
Hollow blocks are very effective during laying because it takes Lee time as compared to conventional buildings stones.
Here are some of the advantages of using precast hollow blocks as a building material;
1. Possess High Compressive Strength
2. Rapid in construction , takes less time
3. Have low self-weight.
4. The Air spaces provides good thermal insulation
5. A good fire and abrasion resistance.
6. Have very good stability.
