IEEE & Centurion Systems Limited - A Legacy That Continues to Shape Engineering in East Africa

Long before Industry 4.0 became a global movement, the foundations of a vibrant engineering community in East Africa were already being laid.

In the early years of IEEE in the region, Dr. Kevit Desai played a pioneering role in founding the IEEE East African Chapter, bringing together engineers, researchers and technology leaders around a shared vision: advancing engineering excellence across East Africa.

For many years, the Chapter operated from the offices of Centurion Systems Limited, where CSL provided not only office space, but also administrative support, infrastructure and a home from which countless technical meetings, career events and professional activities were coordinated. Historic photographs from the CSL archives capture IEEE Careers Open Days hosted at Centurion Systems and the landmark IEEE AFRICON 2009 conference held in Nairobi.

Today, that vision has grown into a thriving IEEE community with active Sections, Chapters and Student Branches across East Africa, engaging thousands of engineers and students through technical conferences, research, innovation programmes and professional development. In Kenya alone, active IEEE Student Branches now exist at universities including the University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Technical University of Kenya, Kenyatta University, Strathmore University and Moi University, with many more branches across the wider Region 8 community.

More than three decades later, that commitment continues through CSL's mission of developing world-class engineering talent, strengthening industry, and creating opportunities for the next generation of innovators.

Engineering excellence is built one generation at a time—and we are proud to have been there from the very beginning.
