Introducing Power Factor Correction (PFC)
This is a technique used to improve the power factor of an electrical system, which is a measure of how effectively electrical power is being used.

What is Power Factor?
Power Factor = Real Power (kW) / Apparent Power (kVA)

It ranges from 0 to 1. A power factor of 1 (or 100%) means all the power is being effectively used to do useful work.

A low power factor indicates poor efficiency – more power is drawn from the source than is actually used.

Why is Correction Needed?
In systems with motors, fluorescent lighting, or other inductive loads, the power factor is often less than 1 due to reactive power (kVAR), which doesn’t do useful work but still loads the system.

How Does Power Factor Correction Work?
PFC uses devices like: Capacitor banks, Synchronous condensers and Active PFC circuits (in electronic equipment).

These devices offset the inductive effects of the load, bringing the power factor closer to 1. This reduces energy losses, improves voltage regulation, and can lead to lower electricity bills, especially in industrial and commercial settings.
