Better skills = Better livestock policies = Better livelihoods! 🇰🇪🇿🇲🇳🇬

ILRI’s LiveSys project has officially kicked off its capacity-building journey! We’re working with government officials and farmer organizations to make sure Africa's livestock sector is:
✅ Climate-resilient
✅ Biodiversity-friendly
✅ Gender-responsive

Participants from the first session are already planning to implement new climate sub-units and use "bankable" project designs to attract funding for local farmers. 📈

Together, we’re securing the future of millions of rural families. 🌍✨

Did you know that in Uganda, nearly 60% of households depend on livestock? 🇺🇬🐖

While women are the backbone of pig production, many are discouraged from the most lucrative parts of the business because of old prejudices. Phrases like "that's a man's job" or "it's inappropriate for a woman" keep families from reaching their full potential.

The International Livestock Research Institute () is working to change that! By engaging both men and women in community reflections, they are proving that:
✅ Women are just as capable of being animal health workers.
✅ Men benefit when their wives have more economic power.
✅ Breaking norms leads to better education and nutrition for children. 📚🍲

1️⃣ Beyond Milk: Did you know camel hump fat is one of the best natural moisturizers? We’re looking at soaps and cosmetics to boost youth/women-led enterprises! 🧴✨

2️⃣ Health First: Addressing "unknown" camel diseases through regional registries and rapid diagnostics. A priority! 🩺🌍

3️⃣ Breeding Tech: Overcoming gaps in artificial insemination through advanced embryo transfers.

4️⃣ Climate Smart: Protecting the "resilience animal" of the drylands while managing healthy rangelands 🌵🐪.

Rangelands cover over 40% of the Earth's land surface, yet they remain one of the most under-recognized ecosystems. 🌍✨

We’re heading to Africa 2026 to change that. Catch our speakers at multiple sessions in the next two days. Together with pastoralist communities, we’re spotlighting innovation, governance, and the power of local stewardship.

The global agricultural community has lost a titan. We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Eugene Robert Terry (1937–2026), a visionary leader whose work transformed African agricultural science.

From serving as the inaugural Director General of WARDA (now AfricaRice) to his roles at the The World Bank Group and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), Terry’s career was defined by an unwavering commitment to Africa’s smallholder farmers. At International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), we were privileged to have him chair the BecA-ILRI Hub Advisory Panel, where his wisdom and curiosity left an indelible
mark.

As Appolinaire Djikeng, Director General of ILRI, noted: "He brought a genuine belief that science could and should serve the most vulnerable."Terry’s legacy lives on in the institutions he built and the generations of scientists he mentored.

Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues worldwide. 🌍🌱Read the full tribute: https://on.cgiar.org/48C4RAy
