From unpredictable outbreaks to early warning systems

In many African communities, waterborne diseases like cholera still strike suddenly—overwhelming health systems and putting lives at risk.

APTI Fellow Dr. Yaovi Gildas Hounmanou, a microbial genomics researcher from Benin, is working to change that. His research combines genomics and machine learning to identify dangerous pathogens earlier and help health systems respond faster.

Beyond repeated pneumonia—finding the root cause 🩺

In Kenya, pneumonia is a leading cause of hospitalisation among children. But for some, it keeps coming back—causing lasting damage and raising deeper questions.

Dr. Diana Marangu‑Boore, fellow of the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative and a paediatrician and researcher at the University of Nairobi, is working to uncover the often‑missed genetic causes behind recurrent pneumonia. Her research focuses on conditions such as inborn errors of immunity, primary ciliary dyskinesia, and cystic fibrosis—many of which remain underdiagnosed in African settings.

Through the programme, she is helping to build Kenya’s diagnostic capacity, introducing cutting‑edge tools like high‑speed microscopy and sweat chloride testing for the first time, while developing practical clinical pathways for real‑world care.

Day 2 Highlights: Driving collaboration for a green transition

The second day of the Water–Energy Nexus for Green Transition workshop at AAS marked a major milestone with the launch of the Bridge Africa project—a collaborative initiative between African and Italian partners aimed at strengthening research capacity, education, and innovation.

The discussions brought together scientists, policymakers, and institutions to explore:
⚡ Green investment and knowledge transfer in renewable energy
📊 The role of policy in shaping energy use and economic outcomes
🔬 Research infrastructure development, including the African Light Source
🌱 Sustainable solutions through circular economy and advanced materials

With participation from African, Italian, and G7 partners, the initiative underscores the importance of co-creation, knowledge exchange, and long-term partnerships in addressing Africa’s climate and sustainability challenges.
