KenGen Kenya today hosted Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado of Japan during her visit to Kenya, accompanied by the Ambassador of Japan to Kenya, H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura. KenGen MD & CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, welcomed Her Imperial Highness alongside General Manager, Geothermal Development, Peketsa Mangi, and Richard Mavisi Liahona, representing the State Department for Energy.

For decades, Japan has been an important partner in Kenya’s energy development, supporting the expansion and modernization of infrastructure, technical capacity and geothermal development, while Kenya’s position as a global leader in geothermal energy has created a strong foundation for practical cooperation around clean energy and the wider energy transition.

The relationship also speaks to a broader energy diplomacy agenda in which countries can work together not only to increase electricity generation, but to advance energy security, climate resilience, regional power trade and sustainable economic development.

Having served Kenya for more than four decades, we are giving this historic plant a new lease of life, increasing its capacity from 45MW to 63.3MW and extending its operational life by more than 25 years.

KenGen Kenya MD & CEO Eng. Peter Njenga, together with General Manager, Commercial Services, Ronoh Kibet, hosted Tica Group Chairman Jiang Li and a delegation from Exergy Turkey led by Exergy Group Deputy CEO and Group CFO, Luca Pozzoni, and General Manager Erdogan Arpaci, for a courtesy call at KenGen.

This meeting was an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the evolving energy landscape, with discussions touching on renewable energy development, technology, investment opportunities and the importance of strong industry partnerships in expanding reliable and sustainable electricity generation.
